The RF 85mm F1.2 is the first lens as a part of six new upcoming RF lenses for the Canon EOS R system. The Canon RF 85mm is optimized for utilization with the new Eye Detection AF feature on the EOS R and RP cameras. Explore more down below.
Eye Detection AF autofocus
It seems that the next challenge of the lens/cameras manufactures is the improvement of the Eye Detection AF (Auto Focus) technologies and capabilities. We have reported here about Nikon’s newly developed eye-detection AF capabilities (still under development and expected to be released in the upcoming firmware updates). According to Canon, the utilization of this technology is crucial especially in the new RF 85mm since this is a telephoto lens and the shallow depth of field makes the focus pulling a challenge.

Final thoughts
The Canon RF 85mm F1.2 seems like a robust and efficient lens that is dedicated to portraits and shallow depth of field style shots. However, it’s not cheap. As filmmakers, we would want to consider investing a bit more and purchase cinema dedicated glass.
