Extraction, which is scheduled to be released on April 24, 2020, in Netflix, is an upcoming American action thriller film directed by Sam Hargrave and screenplay by Joe Russo.
The story is about Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth), a fearless black market mercenary, embarks on the most deadly extraction of his career when he’s enlisted to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord.

Crazy (and risky) cinematography
Recently, Netflix has released a making-of featurette that demonstrates some insane cinematography stunts in order to get the most exciting action shots for the film. In some of the shots, we can see Hargrave, which is also a well-experienced stuntman whose past credits include Avengers: Endgame and Captain America: Civil War, strapped to the front of a car while holding a camera to get the shot he wants for the sequence.
According to Hargrave, the sequences are assembled from a series of long shots that are stitched together to allow the continuity of the action. This kind of cinematography must be well-choreographed and coordinated. As stated by Hargrave: “The constant challenge is how to push the edge of the envelope to raise the bar for action”.

Shot on RED Monstro 8K and DXL2
Extraction was shot by cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel, ASC, on two main cameras that basically are the same: RED Monstro 8K and Panavision DXL2. Both cameras own the same RED Monstro 8K VV sensor which allows 8K resolution on a huge 40.96 mm x 21.60 mm dimensions that enable the large-format look.
We believe that the RED Monstro was used within those intense action scenes and the DXL2 was utilized on more static shots. Furthermore, according to IMDB Tech Spec, the Red Dragon 6K was also used to shoot the film. Watch the BTS video below and try to identify those cameras:
