Digital Cinema Society (DCS)

The Digital Cinema Society (DCS) is a nonprofit educational cooperative dedicated to the industry’s informed integration of new technology. The DCS owns a large formation of an international membership nearing 5,000 that counts some of the top filmmaking, technology, and business leaders in the entertainment industry including Academy Award winners, educators, ASC cinematographers, ACE editors, leading technologists, and senior management from manufacturers, studios, exhibitors, and networks. The Society’s purpose is to examine all media, solutions, services, and technologies without favoring any one brand, service, or format over another.

Educational content with added value for industry professionals

We wrote before about the DCS regarding its large-format lens panel, which was pretty fascinating and educating and was held at Cine Gear Expo LA 2019. Based on this panel, we built a chart with selected large-format glass. Read our article to explore more about this specific panel. In recent years, the DCS was focus mainly on lenses and hosted lens specialists from leading companies. Y.M.Cinema Magazine attended those events at Cine Gear 2017 and 2018 which were quite informative.

Due to the cancellation of the NAB Show 2020, DCS has decided to initiate discussions with industry professionals and educators on a variety of topics related to filmmaking. Those interviews were recorded and published on the DCS website. As stated by DCS: “ It is our goal to continue to inform the community about new products and services much as we would have done with our traditional interviews from the show floor at NAB. In this case, however, we conducted these interviews from our homes. More interviews are being added as they are posted, so check back throughout the month to catch up on the latest cinema product and technology news”. Till now, there are 22 interviews which are conducted by Cinematographer and Founder of the Digital Cinema Society, James Mathers.

The future of the industry’s main events

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our industry (and others) causing cancelations of main events that are crucial for the filmmaking industry’s continuity regarding the development of connections, new technologies, and more. However, NAB has founded the NAB Show Express which replaces the Expo with an online marketplace, resources, educational VODs, and more. As for the Cine Gear, it has been postponed to October this year. Nevertheless, in our opinion, we might be seeing more initiatives like the DCS 2020 Cinema Technology Spotlight Series come to life and offer high-quality focused and professional online content.
