Heat issues regarding 8K RAW
This document has not been addressing the main issue of the EOS R5, which is a significant limitation regarding recording time due to heat accumulation. The R5 suffers from serious recording time limitation which is about 20 minutes of continuous shooting at room temperature (25 degrees centigrade). For that, there is a newly developed feature by Canon called Overheat control protection. This feature is a new setting in EOS R5 and EOS R6 that temporarily changes display details such as resolution or displayed frame rate in movie recording standby, to help prevent the camera from becoming hot internally during standby periods. As a result, image quality on the standby screen may differ in quality from image quality on the screen during movie recording. Although this feature can reduce the recovery time after the camera turned off (due to heat when recording on 8K RAW), it has its limitations, since the camera is sealed and there is no heat control activation (fans for instance). It’s important to emphasize that the EOS R5 is made for short takes. As an Israeli action shooter, I wouldn’t use this camera shooting sports in the Israeli summer, unless the shots are limited to a few minutes maximum.
