AMD wants to create affordable workstations by utilizing its own mighty Threadripper CPUs. Now, by introducing the new Threadripper Pro implemented exclusively inside the new Lenovo’s ThinkStation P620, we can say that this mission might be accomplished.
The race for 8K editing
AMD is known for its affordable GPUs which are based on advanced silicon technology. Furthermore, AMD has announced six months ago about the Ryzen Threadripper 3990X as a CPU that its aim to boost ultra-high-resolution editing. This milestone can be defined as a game-changer for content creators and was developed with RED Digital Cinema. make sure to read our article about it: AMD Partners With RED to Release the World’s First 64-Core CPU: The Ryzen Threadripper 3990X. Now, AMD is introducing a new generation/flagship of the mighty Threadripper called Threadripper Pro. Scroll down to read more.
Ryzen Threadripper PRO
According to AMD, this new PRO version of the Ryzen Threadripper is built for the most demanding professional environments, like rendering and editing in 8K. As stated by AMD: “AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3995WX offers up to 27% better-multithreaded performance over the competition’s best dual processor workstations1 and leadership performance in over 25 applications and benchmarks”.
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processors offer full spectrum compute capabilities with unmatched core counts for multi-threaded workloads plus high-frequency single-core performance for lightly threaded workloads. According to AMD, this combination makes AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO Processors “The best choice for artists, architects, engineers and data scientists”.

Engineered for professional content creation
AMD emphasizes that the goals of the Threadripper PRO are to be focused on high demand content creation: “As content creators look to future proof their work, the trend to capture and edit higher resolution footage is on the rise. Professional editors and post-production teams can take advantage of multiple CPU cores when playing back ultra-high-resolution footage as well as when encoding or transcoding”. The world’s first 64 core PRO workstation
The Lenovo ThinkStation 0620 lets you choose from rich configuration options, and adding up to 4 high-end or 2 ultra-high-end NVIDIA Quadro RTX graphics cards to maximize GPU-based solutions. “Our customers need class-leading, innovative solutions to power through the most demanding applications,” said Rob Herman, General Manager, Workstation and Client AI Business Unit, Lenovo. “By leveraging the AMD Threadripper PRO Processors for our newest workstation, the ThinkStation P620, we can offer users the smarter solutions to create complex models, render photorealistic imagery or analyze geophysical and seismic interpretations, while offering crucial security and scalability features to ensure safe and effective operation for our professional users.”
Price and availability
For now, you can’t by the Threadripper Pro independently but when implemented in the ThinkStation P620 that will be available this fall. However, the price is yet to be revealed. The estimations indicate on a $5,000 initial price point, depends on configuration.

Insights
For now, it seems that the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 armed with AMD’s new Threadripper Pro is the closest out-of-the-box contender for the Mac Pro. However, the initial price is pretty much similar. For a professional workstation that is capable of editing 8K RAW, you’ll have to invest $5,000 more, just like when buying a configured Mac Pro. Nevertheless, this is good news for those who prefer the Windows ecosystem rather than Apple’s walled garden.
What do you think about the ThinkStation P620? Would you prefer it over the Mac Pro?
