C70 = R5 + C300 Mark III

The Canon Cinema EOS was announced 3 months ago with the concept of hybridization between the C300 Mark III and the R5. To learn more about the C70 make sure to read our article that covers the announcement (Canon Introduces the EOS C70: Hybridization Between R5 and C300 Mark III). Basically, the C70 characterized by HDR and the best Canon color science (Dual Gain Output (DGO)) that was implemented on the C300 mark III, combined with the mirrorless RF mount. Indeed, the C70 is the first cinema camera that is armed with Canon’s RF mount, which grants the camera a lot of significant advantages and is the smallest among the Cinema EOS family. Nevertheless, there is no RAW option, and the maximum resolution is 4K. However, it seems good enough for Netflix.

The full-frame option

Although the C70 has a Super 35 sensor, it can be transformed into a full-frame camera with the dedicated Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x. This adapter boosts the camera capabilities to produce full-frame imagery (more FOV – but DOF stays the same). Netflix setting for Canon EOS C70

Here’re the settings and best-practices for capture with the EOS C70 on Netflix 4k Originals:

  • Sensor Mode: Super 35mm, or Super 16mm (Cropped)
  • Main Recording Format: XF-AVC
  • Resolution: 4096 x 2160 YCC422 10 bit and 3840 x 2160 YCC422 10 bit
  • Custom Picture Presets: Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3

Canon Log 2 provides 16+ stops of dynamic range and allows for extended shadow detail retention. With this extended shadow detail often comes a slight increase in noise. Canon Log 3 provides the same highlight retention however, one less stop in the shadows. This provides a cleaner image that is often easier to handle in a high volume post-production process. If Canon Log 2 is captured, a 3D LUT is available from Canon to transform it into Canon Log 3, removing the shadow detail and therefore additional shadow noise, for a simpler post-production process.
