Sony’s drone project

It’s no secret that Sony is eager to enter the drone market, and even trying to conquer it. We’ve reported here previously about the Airpeak project that is based on Sony accumulated knowledge and expertise regarding AI, imaging, and robotics. As stated by Sony: Combining our imaging and sensing technological expertise and AI Robotics, we open the skies into an infinite creative playground – one with unprecedented freedom. Let us lift you to a never-reached creative experience by unleashing all constraints and barriers”. The announcement was made back in November 2020. The drone project is most probably based on a patent application filed in 2019 (read more here: Sony is Developing its own Filmmaking Drone Called Airpeak). Anyway, today, more info has been revealed.

According to Sony, the “Airpeak” brand was assigned to “reflect its aspiration to contribute to the further evolvement and the creation of the unprecedented value through its imaging and sensing technology as well as 3R technologies (Reality, Real-time, and Remote) in the drone area”. Also, Sony states that: “Airpeak will support the creativity of video creators to the fullest extent possible, aiming to contribute to the further development of the entertainment industry as well as to improved efficiency and savings in various industries. Airpeak will also promote this project to enable drone-use with the highest level of safety and reliability in the environments where this has been difficult in the past”.

Airpeak specifications and capabilities

There is no info regarding the drone capabilities nor specs, however, as explained and demonstrated by Sony, this is not a small drone. Airpeak will be capable of flying mirrorless cameras, and it seems it was designed to carry an Alpha camera system. Indeed, Sony stated that the payload of the drone can be equipped with an Alpha mirrorless camera to capture high quality, full-frame aerial photography, and video. “Airpeak, the industry’s smallest class of drone that can be equipped with the Alpha system, is capable of dynamic filming and precise, stable flight, and aims to contribute to the world of entertainment while also pursuing new possibilities for creative expression” Sony adds.

Moreover, the Airpeak project is on the Sony CINE website, which indicates that this project is aimed at the professional filmmaking industry. Nevertheless, Sony has released a cool demonstration of the drone capabilities as the commercial of Vision-S was made by Airpeak. Watch it below:

There’s a BTS video as well. Check it out below:

When?

There’s no release date specified. However, the company says that as the first phase of this project, it will launch a new business targeted for professional photography and video production in the spring of 2021. Also, Sony is obtaining feedback from professional drone users and seeking collaborators in the United States and Japan to participate in our Airpeak project. All details here.
