As the second trailer has dropped, the imagery starts to pop out, revealing a very unique vintage look. Zack Snyder’s ‘Army of the Dead’ was crafted with the help of some cinematography goodies that were fully customized for Snyder, including the Canon rehoused Rangefinder vintage full-frame lenses, stitched for the RED Monstro.
Shot and directed by Snyder
Army of the Dead is an upcoming American zombie heist film directed and shot by Zack Snyder. The film stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi and Garret Dillahunt. The film released in select theaters and on Netflix on May 21. We wrote before about the uniqueness of this project that its director also served as his own cinematographer. Furthermore, it seems that Snyder was so pedant regarding the cinematography, that specially made cameras (“Some very special Monstros” as stated by RED Digital Cinema CEO Jarred Land), and lenses were utilized, in order to grant ‘Army of the Dead’ the desired look.
Shot on Canon Rangefinder rehoused lenses
The film was shot almost exclusively with Canon Rangefinder lenses rehoused by Zero Optik specifically for Snyder. Zero Optik stated that “The production carried three 50mm f/0.95 primes (pictured on Zack’s custom Red Monstro body) and three Canon 35mm f/1.5 primes.
We built these with stainless steel Leica M mounts so that we could ensure the housings would stand up to the abuse of shooting for months in the desert.

Zero Optics added: “We built these with stainless steel Leica M mounts so that we could ensure the housings would stand up to the abuse of shooting for months in the desert. Zack was fine with that since he was prepared to shoot the movie with unhoused Canon Rangefinder lenses in M-mount (and Monstro bodies can accommodate Leica M)”. Zero Optik said that: “The amber coatings give beautiful warm flares, the bokeh is about as smooth and creamy as possible, and our design brings close-focus to about 21”. The result is a potent and flattering full-frame portrait lens with character for days”.
