First, let’s answer the question above, and the answer is NO! Sony has launched its new smartphone flagship, which is the Xperia PRO-I. The PRO-I is armed with an impressive 1-inch sensor that allows phase detection autofocus, and a real (not computerized) cinematic depth of field, as opposed to the computerized bokeh of the iPhone 13 Pro. Xperia PRO-I: 1-inch sensor
Sony has today announced a new Xperia smartphone developed specifically for today’s content creators, the Xperia PRO-I. Combining a 1.0-type sensor, a 24mm ZEISS Tessar Optics, advanced image processing and AF (autofocus), 4K 120p video recording, and more, the Xperia PRO-I aimed to deliver professional imaging quality from an ultra-slim 8.9mm form factor.
Eye AF technology and object tracking in video shooting
The new Xperia PRO-I delivers high-quality video performance and easy-to-use post-production features for a stress-free workflow. For greater creative flexibility, the Xperia PRO-I is the world’s first smartphone to enable the user to shoot high-quality video in 4K 120fps, which allows users to capture and playback fast-moving scenes and slow-motion video at up to 5x. Capturing smooth, shake-free video is facilitated thanks to the latest Optical SteadyShot with FlawlessEye. According to Philip, the Xperia PRO-I is the best camera phone he has used. The video was made with a very early pre-production model, the image quality wasn’t final and the 50mm lens wasn’t working. Not an iPhone 13 Pro killer
Yesterday, iOS 15.1 was pushed to iPhone (and iPad) users. With iOS 15.1 or later, iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max can record videos in the Apple ProRes format in the Camera app using any of its cameras in Video mode. Thus, you can capture ProRes videos on an iPhone 13 Pro at 30fps / 1080p on 128GB models or 4K on 256GB models and above. The iPhone owns a much smaller sensor than the Xperia PRO-I (no info about the iPhone 13 Pro image sensor). Nevertheless, its bokeh is computerized as opposed to optically made in the Xperia. What’s better, computer-generated cinematic imagery, or a pure optical output from a large sensor? Judging by the footage, the iPhone has better image quality compared to the Xperia PRO-I. You can’t tell if the bokeh is computer-generated at all since it’s accurately visualized by a precise algorithm and advanced technology. Nevertheless, a large image sensor implemented on a mobile phone has its own significant advantages. But footage-wise, iPhone 13 Pro wins. But this is just my personal perspective.
