The Kinefinity flagship, MAVO Edge 8K Cinema Camera can now be preordered on the B&H website. That constitutes a stamp/proof that Kinefinity slowly but surely is being excepted in the US as well, and hence, it’s a piece of good news for worldwide filmmakers. Next stops: Netflix & Hollywood (?!)
Kinefinity MAVO Edge: A superb 8K imagery
In April 2020, Kinefinity which is a Chinese camera company has released its flagship, the brand-new large-format 8K cine camera, MAVO Edge. With a whole-new carbon fiber camera body, the MAVO Edge 8K cinema camera is equipped with an 8K 70P Full-Frame CMOS imaging sensor that has more pixels than the RED Raptor (owns a native resolution of 8192×5288). The design of the MAVO Edge is so beautiful (reminds a compact version of the ARRI Mini LF), which has granted Kinefinity the prestige iF Design Award 2021.
Utilizing elite codecs
The MAVO Edge can directly record Apple’s ProRes4444/XQ codec which has been highly expected by the video industry. From the capture of its 8K CMOS image over the delicate color processing to the 8K ProRes4444 encoding and storage, these complex processes and the ultra-high bandwidth bitrate processing all happen within the compact MAVO Edge body. Aside from this, MAVO Edge also supports in-camera ProRes4444/XQ, ProRes422HQ, and H264 proxy. In the beginning, the manufacturer promised the option for ProRes RAW. However. Due to the patent war, this option was eliminated. Nevertheless, it seems that users are pretty happy with the images derived from the 4444. Kinefinity cinema cameras are not approved by Netflix though.
Well accepted by filmmakers
The excellent overall image quality of the Kinefinity MAVO Edge was well accepted by filmmakers, who used the camera with high-end glass to film commercials, features, and indie projects. The ideal combination of the impressive specs and price made the MAVO Edge the weapon of choice by cinematographers and professional content creators. For instance, check out this link which presents selected Kinefinity MAVO Edge projects that look pretty spectacular.
Now in the U.S (including B&H)
In October, Kinefinity announced on a new US website – kinefinity.us which features the latest products, support, and demo materials. Moreover, Kinefinity introduced a new service center located in the United States. The brand new service center located right in the heart of Hollywood at Burbank, Los Angeles, will provide in-house repairs directly. Moreover, a few days ago, for the first time, the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K is available for order (preorder) via the B&H website.
That’s truly amazing since it opens up more possibilities to purchase the camera from trusted dealers. Furthermore, that strengthens the support and service capabilities which are essential factors involved in the decision to purchase a cinema camera. B&H offers the camera in various packages starting at $12,000. Explore the purchasing possibilities in the Product List at the end of this article.
Closing thoughts
It’s very satisfying to reveal this Chinese cinema cameras manufacturer expanding its roots in the U.S. I personally know many filmmakers who are eager to buy the camera but haven’t pulled the trigger due to the logical thought of impaired servicing and support. Now those crucial factors are significantly improved, which elevates the chances that Kinefinity will be tried out by more and more filmmakers. Hopefully, this will help Kinefinity to get into more prestigious productions, and earn more recognition and reputation, including in Netflix or even in Hollywood.

The sensor comparison graphic is a bit misleading. When I first looked at it, I thought it was physical sensor dimensions, but it’s pixels. Someone who doesn’t know dimensions might think that the Mavo Edge has a massive 65mm-like sensor
Agreed. It’s a screengrab from the U.S website.
This Chinese-made 8K cinema camera may get wider adoption with distribution via B&H and a new service center in Burbank, CA. The sensor is one of the biggest around – even bigger than the new RED Raptor sensor and fully capable of 8K/60fps acquisition. Pricing starts at $12K, half that of the RED Raptor.
