Tomorrow, DJI is going to announce a new drone within the Mavic series. The drone, titled Mavic 3 Pro, will be armed with three built-in cameras, in order to allow zoom capabilities on-the-fly.
The history of the Mavic: ‘Pro’ version was first
The Mavic Pro was released in late 2016. This drone was the first of the Mavic series. Hence, it’s interesting that the first model was defined as ‘Pro’. The drone was capable of capturing 4K video, has a flight range of 4.3 miles, and a flight time of 27 minutes, with a maximum speed of 65 km/h. One of the main unique characteristics of the Mavic Pro is the design, which allows the drone to be folded small enough in order to fit into a small bag. Its legs and propellers fold underneath and to the side of the drone to form a compact package. Then the Pro Platinum came along. The upgraded version includes better battery life and improved noise reduction due to new propellers and electronic speed controllers. In August 2018, DJI has introduced the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom. Both drones had 10 obstacle avoidance sensors on all sides and a max flight time of 31 minutes. They could also record 4K video at 30 FPS. Furthermore, the Mavic 2 Pro featured a Hasselblad camera, which indicated enhanced imagery capabilities. The DJI Mavic 3 was released on 5 November 2021 and owned a 4/3 CMOS Hasselblad L2D-20c camera which included Hasselblad’s Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology. The camera had 12.8 stops of dynamic range and was able to shoot up to 5.1k video. And now, DJI is going to release the ‘Pro’ version of the Mavic 3.
DJI Mavic 3 Pro
The introduction of the Mavic 3 Pro will happen tomorrow. Although there’s no leaked spec sheet, we can only guess, based on rumors. First, the DJI Mavic Pro is a triple camera/sensor drone. It’s hard knowing the focal length of the main camera. Some are saying 50mm, others assume 70mm. As for the other cameras, the most accurate assumption indicates that these are zoom cameras: X3, and X7. Furthermore, the user will be able to choose the correct zoom via the app, and in real-time. As for the sensors, we can definitely tell that none of the sensors are large format/ full frame. Speculations indicate that we’re talking about a size of approximately 1 inch —4/3 the max. Obviously, the main camera will have the largest sensor. Regarding resolution — expect about 4K 60 or even 5K. Anyway, the most interesting characteristic of the DJI Mavic 3 Pro is its ability to zoom and switch cameras on the fly. As for the price —the drone plus controller is estimated to cost around $3,500 USD. Let’s wait for tomorrow to find out.
Initial thoughts
The DJI Mavic 3 Pro seems like a professional, compact, and ‘mobile’ drone, that can shoot nice images with the help of Hasselblad’s technology. The ability to zoom during an actual flight may be super handy in many filmmaking scenarios (and without the need for a zoom lens). Curious to explore DJI’s demonstrations of this drone.
