BREAKING: RED Digital Cinema has just announced its new flagship DSMC3 models, which are RED V-Raptor [X]  and its XL version. Both are armed with a newly developed global shutter sensor, and that makes them the world’s first large format cinema cameras with a global shutter sensor, and without any compromise on the dynamic range (as claimed by RED). More details are below.

Dynamic range

As stated by RED Digital Cinema:  “Where other global shutter cameras sacrifice dynamic range, RED’s internal sensor development has continued to push the boundaries and created the global shutter V-RAPTOR [X] sensor, maintaining the impressive 17+ stops of dynamic range from original V-RAPTOR 8K VV”. RED adds that shooters will be able to capture more color and detail into highlights than ever before while providing even softer and more subtle highlight roll-off when in uncontrollable or extreme environments. Main features of the V-Raptor [X]

New Large-Format Standard

This first large-format global shutter camera is built around the same key features of the original V-RAPTOR, including a locking Canon RF lens mount, two unique 12G-SDI monitoring outputs, and dual CFexpress Type B card slots that support up to 8K120 capture. The V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV also features a redesigned sensor cavity that mitigates stray light and improves contrast, plus improved in-camera audio preamps.

RED Global Vision

The Phantom Track function streamlines any virtual production workflow using GhostFrame or frame remapping, capturing distinct R3D clips for each subframe slice in addition to enabling monitoring of either slice live on set over each SDI output. This enables your director and talent to work with the aid of a greenscreen background while the VF/X team can simultaneously view the frame without having to view or lock in that background. Phantom Track can also be used when applying dedicated ad overlays during a live broadcast.

Advanced Connectivity

The V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV uses a DSMC3 platform to offer advanced connectivity solutions like remote control, remote monitoring, in-camera Frame.io integrations, AWS (Amazon Web Services) direct upload, RED Connect for live 8K R3D video over IP or live 4K via SMPTE ST 2110, and more.

Dual-Voltage Battery Support

An integrated V-mount battery plate with multiple auxiliary power outputs supports both high-voltage 26V batteries and standard 12V batteries.

Internal ND Filters

Motorized clear and 2 to 7-stop ND filters with 1/4, 1/3, and 1-stop increments provide precision exposure control.

Auxiliary Power Outputs

Multiple 12 and 24V outputs provide auxiliary power for accessories and peripherals, all in a centralized location.

Viewing Options Include RED Touch 7.0″

Compatibility with the DSMC3 RED Touch 7.0″ LCD, and front-facing 3G-SDI and 2-pin, 12V power ports support any operator’s viewing preferences.

SDI Output Plus Wireless Control

  • The V-RAPTOR XL [X] 8K VV offers wireless timecode, genlock, and camera control.
  • Four SDI outputs support onboard monitors and your DIT cart.

Initial thoughts

This is a logical move by RED. Knowing the company, it makes sense to use the knowledge accumulated on developing the global shutter sensor of the Komodo and to implement it into the VV DSMC3 models – which are the Raptor. Utilizing a global shutter on a large format sensor is a big deal, especially if no DR is impaired. We can’t wait for some sample footage to explore this unique combination of FF and global shutter.
