As CES 2019 is just around the corner, Samsung brags about its new monitors which are dedicated for gamers and content creators: The Ultra-Wide 49-inch CRG9, Slim Designed 4K (the Space Monitor) and UR59C 4K curved. Each has its own unique characteristic. Read more below.
CRG9 49” monitor: Super Ultra-Wide Screen with Dual QHD Resolution
Starting with the most special one, which is the 49” ultra-wide screen. According to Samsung, the CRG9 is the “world’s first high-resolution super ultra-wide gaming monitor”. The CRG9 owns a 32:9 aspect ratio. The monitor offers a 120Hz refresh rate with a fast 4ms response time on a 49-inch display that minimizes image lag and motion blur. The monitor also features AMD Radeon FreeSyncTM 2 HDR technology to reduce stutter, screen tearing and input latency.

HDR10 with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits
Editors and colorists will enjoy the dual QHD resolution (5120×1440) and the HDR10 with an incredible peak brightness of 1,000 nits, providing superfine detail in the brightest and the darkest parts of an image. HDR10 delivers high-contrast HDR which offers advanced spectacular highlights not available in non-HDR monitors. The monitor also leverages Samsung’s revolutionary Quantum dot technology for an exceptionally wide range of accurate color reproduction, and a 1,800mm screen curvature and an ultra- wide field of view for complete visibility. We wrote an in-depth article regarding HDR which you can read here.

It’s important to note that 1000 nits capability is truly high dynamic range characteristic, means that the delta between the blacks and highlights will be maximized. This could help colorists to achieve the most of their HDR footage. Most of the HDR monitors are capable of 500 nits and less. However, 1000 nits monitors are extremely expensive and that’s a main drawback. It would be interesting to see the CRG9 price tag though. As a true HDR monitor, it’s not going to be cheap.
Space Monitor
This monitor is an ergonomic wise. The structure of the monitor leverages its sleek design and functionality in order “to allow users to focus on what’s on the screen and not what’s around it” as Samsung claims. Its unique built-in space saving solution, a minimalist fully-integrated arm, clamps to the desk and frees up desk space for ultimate user productivity.

The monitor ships in two versions: 27-inch model and 32-inch model presents content in 4K UHD.
UR59C 32-inch UHD curved monitor
The last one in the group (for now) is the UR59C 32-inch UHD curved monitor. Samsung claims that this monitor is ideal for content creators that seek both versatility and performance. The UR59C 32-inch monitor features a UHD curved display with a 2,500:1 contrast ratio and a full 3840×2160 4K UHD resolution with support for up to one billion colors. According to Samsung, “The 1500R curvature delivers a truly immersive experience that shines while creating content and art, watching videos or gaming while reducing the eye strain typically associated with long periods of traditional monitor use.”

Final thoughts
Unfortunately, no price tags yet. In my opinion, the first one (CRG9 49” Super Ultra-Wide) which is also the most interesting monitor in the group, is not going to be cheap. For reference we can compare it to the CHG90 49″ 32:9 Curved which costs around $1000. However, the CRG9 should cost higher than that due to its impressive HDR capabilities.
Anyway, I believe that the prices will be revealed at CES, when you can experience all three monitors at Samsung’s CES booth #15006 at the Las Vegas Convention Center from January 8-11, 2019.
