Although it has not yet been confirmed, it’s a strong rumor. According to Canon Rumors, there is a high possibility that Canon will announce a new EOS Cinema Camera at NAB Show 2019, that is capable of sensor swipe to Full Frame and 8K resolution. Read more below.
The 8K race
From 2015, Canon accelerates development processes regarding a new 8K cinema camera line. Canon knows that it was left behind the 4K race, and thus doesn’t want to make any mistakes regarding 8K-ing. It seems that Canon is deep into 8K market analysis, trial, and error, learning lessons and drawing conclusions in order to catch up with 8K motion capture and workflow.
Canon accelerates development processes regarding a new 8K cinema camera line
Canon has been already testing (successfully) 8K live-video transmission and recently collaborated with Japanese directors to produce an 8K film by using Canon 8K cameras equipped with the company’s rich lineup of EF Cinema Lenses covering the full range from wide-angle to telephoto, and with the ability to record 8K RAW. The 8K camera used to record this film was equipped with a Canon-developed 8K image sensor that realizes the ultra-high resolution of 8192 x 4320 pixels—16x that of 2K—high-precision HDR and a wide color gamut.

Canon’s 8K Technologies
According to Canon (and this is not a rumor), there is a full lineup of 8K equipment spanning input to output already developed, including cameras, lenses and displays. These are fully operational products (beyond production models) and are in the last testing cycle before marketing to the crowd.

NAB Show 2019 as a springboard
Most likely, that Canon will utilize NAB show’s stage in order to present its new technology (EOS Cinema Line?) to the crowd. According to Canon Rumors, we are expecting to a reinvention of the Canon C300 Mark II. Will it be Canon C300 Mark III? Or Canon C300 Mark II FF? Hard to tell. However, the rumors seem to be precise and credible. The new Canon C300 possibly owns the privilege of sensor swapping to 8K and/or Full Frame.
Price reduction?
It’s highly logical that this reinvention of the C300 Mark II will result in a price reduction on the existing Cinema EOS cameras.
We’ll have our fingers on the pulse regarding Canon’s announcements at the NAB Show 2019 to keep you posted, so stay tuned.
