Predictions, rumors, call it whatever you want to call it. The word in the street is that Canon cooks us some nice dishes at NAB 2019. The menu includes EOS-R external RAW and a bit of 10bit in the C200. Read below!
Canon’s slip of the tongue
The official Canon USA Twitter account offered a poll asking whether followers would like to learn more about Canon booth at the NAB Show. Canon offered two options: EOS R external RAW recording, or the Canon RAW light codec. The word “RAW” in the first option was kind of fluff. Having noticed this, Canon has changed the wording of the Twitter poll to only mention external recording.

EOS-R external RAW
By analyzing several rumors sites, plus adding this Twitter “RAW” fluff, we can predict pretty sure that those new Canon’s achievements are: 10bit 4:2:2 on the C200, and external RAW recording on the EOS-R.
Regarding the external RAW recording, it probably is implemented like in the Nikon’s Z Series and executed by the Atoms recorder. We wrote here before about Nikon’s Z Series as the First Full-Frame Mirrorless to Shoot RAW. In that case, Atomos found a way to record ProRes RAW from Nikon Z6 and Z7 via Ninja V Recorder. That achievement made the Nikon Z series to be the first FF mirrorless that allows shooting RAW
We can predict pretty sure that those new Canon’s achievements are: 10bit 4:2:2 on the C200, and external RAW recording on the EOS-R.
It might be the same implementation regarding the EOS-R cameras.
C200 internal 10bit 4:2:2
External RAW aside, the 10bit on the C200 is a very impressive achievement as well. The major disadvantage of the C200 (which is one of the most respected and wanted in the Canon cinema line) is the lack of the ability to shoot codec that sits between the heavy Cinema RAW light and the 8bit MP4. Canon prevented the implementation of the 10bit solution in the C200 due to business cannibalization possibilities of the C300. However, the C300 might be getting upgraded as well (8K option) in the near future (not relevant to the upcoming 2019 NAB).
Wrap it up, those are pretty existing news. We’ll report directly from the NAB Show so stay tuned.
Im not seeing any other websites reporting on Canon C200 update with 10-bit 4:2:2? Was this over speculation? Any new updates to these rumors ?
Hi Evan, Unfortunately, have no updates yet regarding this. This article was based on rumors websites and the formal CanonUSA tweet. I hope we’ll see another updates soon (before Cinegear). Thx, Yossy
