Today, Nikon has released the New Z Series Version 2.0 Firmware which includes enhanced features and performances regarding AF capabilities. No ProRes RAW support yet. Additionally, Nikon has announced a Video Contest for a chance to win $25,000 and a Nikon Z 6 Filmmakers’ Kit. Explore more below.
Z Series Version 2.0 Firmware upgrade
It seems that this upgrade is dedicated to photographers rather than filmmakers. However, filmmakers might find it useful as well. The update includes sharpening of the AF (Auto Focus) capabilities of the Z series as follows:
Eye-Detection AF for still-image shooting
The new firmware offers Eye-Detection AF improved functionality that automatically detects and focuses on human eyes. The camera automatically detects the subject’s eyes to make attaining critical focus on the eyes more comfortable. That can help filmmakers to elevate accuracy when pulling focus before start shooting.
The new firmware enables even faster autofocusing when capturing photos and video in dark or dimly lit scenes, for both stills and video
AF performance improvements in low-light situations
The new firmware enables even faster autofocusing when capturing photos and video in dark or dimly lit scenes, for both stills and video. It will extend the AF detection range*1 from −1 EV to −2 EV with the Z 7, and from −2 EV to −3.5 EV with the Z 6. Besides, the Z 6 will be able to autofocus with even darker scenes.
Support for RAW video output – Not in this update
One of the most requested features is the support of the new output of 4K UHD and Full HD RAW data stream from the camera, that can then be recorded in the compatible ProRes RAW format using an external recorder (Atomos Ninja V). That will allow users to utilize vibrant 12-bit colors to achieve flexible color grading. We wrote about this feature when announced. This significant achievement will define Nikon as the first full-frame mirrorless that is capable of shooting RAW. The development of ProRes RAW recording from Nikon’s Z series cameras is done thank to the partnership between Nikon and Atomos. As explained, the camera outputs a stream of RAW data via a 4K HDMI cable to the Ninja V. This data is then repacked into the ProRes RAW format and recorded to a removable SSD drive in the Ninja V. When shooting is finished, the drive is removed and connected to a computer via USB. Footage can then be decoded (debayered) and edited in the highest possible quality. Using ProRes RAW format keeps file sizes manageable, easy to edit, and future-proof.
Unfortunately, there is no release date for this feature yet.
However, Nikon said that the release timing for this feature will be announced at a later upgrade.

“Whether you’re a seasoned filmmaker, an aspiring creator, or a stills shooter eager to explore the world of video, this is the contest that will give you a chance to follow your passion, share it with the world and potentially be rewarded for your work,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President, Nikon Inc. “The Nikon Z series offers an extensive video feature set that opens up a world of possibilities for filmmakers”
The first, second and third place winners of the Nikon “Follow Your Passion” Z series video contest will each receive a Nikon Z 6 Filmmaker’s Kit worth approximately $4,000. We wrote here before about the new Filmmaker’s Kit that Nikon still offers for $3,800 ($200 price reduction), which has been announced at CES. The kit consists of some filmmaking goodies and the Nikon Z6 Mirrorless Digital Camera as the main dish. As stated by Nikon:” we’re giving videographers and content creators the gear they need to begin capturing high-quality videos with the most compelling hybrid camera on the market.” Additionally, the first and second place winners will take home $25,000 and $10,000 in prize money, respectively. This initiative is a part of Nikon’s strategic pathway of reaching out to filmmakers’ heart.
Full contest details, including rules, can be found by visiting the contest’s website.
Summary
The firmware update offers some advantages that can be used for filmmaking applications. Also, the filmmaking contest looks cool and with decent prices. Nevertheless, we hope that the most expected (and requested) feature by filmmakers (ProRes RAW recording) will be implemented in the next update.
