RED Digital Cinema has decided to offer secondhand “Battle Tested” RED gear. Those certified pre-owned cameras will be sold on REDUSER as RED-certified with a 90-day warranty.
A reliable platform for selling expensive cinema cameras
Like the ARRI CPO (Certified Pre-Owned) program, RED has decided to offer the option to buy used RED gear that underwent a robust evaluation and factory-refurbishment process by RED. The gear will be sold at REDUSER.net. Although REDUSER is one of the most common trade arenas for used RED gear, this time is official. The used and selected gear will be sold as “Battle Tested” with a 90-day warranty by RED.
REDUSER will be selling “battle-tested” RED gear as it becomes available. It will be RED-certified and come with the 90-day battle-tested warranty
Brent Carter, COO at RED
According to Brent Carter, the COO of RED: “As has been discussed on here and at our REDUSER meetups, Jarred, and I want to make REDUSER a safe place for both buyers and sellers of RED gear. Too often, we have seen people scammed. So, here is step one, REDUSER will be selling “battle-tested” RED gear as it becomes available. It will be RED-certified and come with the 90-day battle-tested warranty, but you will have the option to purchase Armor to extend that by another year”.
RED’s Approved Certified Pre-Owned: Examination process
RED defines the examination process as “Battle Tested”. For those of you who are not familiar with this jargon, read below RED’s explanation (taken from REDUSER): “RED Battle-Tested products have gone through a rigorous evaluation and factory-refurbishment process to meet product performance specifications. Products may include some minor cosmetic blemishes and carry a RED Re-Certified Warranty of 90 days from date of delivery.”
With so many people chomping at the bit for a MONSTRO for USD 35K, we wanted to get the ball rolling
Brent Carter, COO at RED
MONSTRO for $35,000
The first batch of cameras to be on sale are the MONSTROs. According to Jarred, the MONSTRO are ready to be shipped for $35k each (compared to a new camera that costs $54,500). You can get your MONSTRO with a 90-day warranty (Battle-tested). Furthermore, you can buy RED ARMOR for them as well to extend the warranty by another year.
The way to get your CPO RED (for now) is to PM Brent on REDUSER. Brent also says that: “As we get fancier, I hope to have direct links here on REDUSER so you can buy via link versus a PM reach out. But with so many people chomping at the bit for a MONSTRO for USD 35K, we wanted to get the ball rolling….Meanwhile, we are also working on other solutions to make buying/selling better, easier, safer….”
Summary
The ARRI CPO program goes very well since it allows to own an ALEXA for a fraction of the price, and with factory warranty. This initiative by RED is expected to succeed as well since the demand is high.

This actually only to protect their own higher prices.
As everyone else they do not want to be draged down in the information asymmetry of Åkerlöf as it lower the price of their new product as well besides scare a potential customer with uncertainty and doubt.
And as competitors either sell great product for less or Like Arri – run the same kind of pre-owned program – Red are forced to get into it as well. Especially as the latest mess Red and Jared have found themselves in.
In that case, this beneficial for consumers. Secondhand arena might be a good thing.
Yes, kind of.
It does not change the information asymmetry, but – the consumers ‘buy’ themselves some insurance from uncertainty and therefor the added cost and sometimes an actual manufacturers warranty it means they are more willing to make the endeavour into the Red brand in this case.
It keeps the secondhand/preowned value up, increases brand loyalty and indirectly enables Red to keep their higher price point.
All these rebranded programs to keep justifying costs of latest models. Red took initiative to keep their second hand market alive and now the new camera costs sounds justifying.
