RED announces a new promotion by offering a free MINI-MAG with the purchase of select DSMC2 and RANGER cameras. That’s about a 7.5% discount when buying a new Gemini, and an almost 10% discount than buying the Helium. Read on.
10% Discount on a new RED camera
Although at first sight, this promotion seems negligible, it actually grants you a decent discount when purchasing a brand new RED camera. The promotion was announced today and it refers to the selected RED cameras which are Gemini (DSMC2 and Ranger), Helium (DSMC2 and Ranger), and Monstro (DSMC2 and Ranger). As stated by RED: “RED is pleased excited to welcome many productions and content creators back to work by offering a free MINI-MAG with the purchase of select DSMC2 and RANGER cameras. Customers will receive one free 480GB RED MINI-MAG (a retail value of $1,450.00/GBP/EUR) with purchase of DSMC2 GEMINI or RED RANGER GEMINI, and/or one free 960GB RED MINI-MAG (a retail value of $2,350.00/ GBP/EUR ) with purchase of DSMC2 HELIUM/ DSMC2 MONSTRO or RED RANGER HELIUM/RED RANGER MONSTRO.

How to get it
RED explains: “When customers purchase directly from RED, on RED.com or via a RED Sales Representative, the MINI-MAG will be added to their final purchase order during the confirmation step. RED.com purchases will not see the MINI-MAG in their cart but can rest assured it will be added to their order before final payment is taken and shipping occurs”. By the way, B&H has already implemented this benefit (check out the slide below). RED emphasizes that this promotion is available for a limited time – July 1, 2020 – December 1, 2020.
Komodo’s media
As the DSMC2 suffers from expensive media, Komodo shooters will be happy with much more affordable options. RED has announced the branded CFAST 2.0 cards by Angelbird. which cost $529 for 512gb, compared to $1,450 for the 480GB Mini-Mags. This means that Komodo media is three times less the price of the Mini-Mags.
Final thoughts
The picture of the upcoming RED Komodo is getting clearer regarding its utilization, purposes, and place as a RED camera compared to the DSMC2 (and Rangers). Personally I don’t think that we’ll see product cannibalization by the Komodo. In fact, the development of the Komodo might pave the pathway for future DSMC3 from many aspects and will be completely different from DSMC2. For now, we can only be guessing what will be implemented in DSMC3 (better power management, compression ratio simplification, global shutter). Till then, I guess we are going to see more promotions and discounts by RED.
