Sony has announced a new educational program called the CineAlta Club, to support and educate the cinematography community. Building on its CineAlta brand, home to cinematic cameras such as VENICE, Sony will be providing a series of online and offline training courses for the community to support them in their preparations for shooting season in the Spring. Offline courses will happen when the situation allows at Sony’s Digital Media Production Centre (DMPC) at Pinewood Studios.

As stated by Claus Pfeifer, Head of Connected Content Acquisition for Sony Professional Europe: “Here at Sony, we’re committed to supporting the cinematography industry as we have done since the introduction of our very first cinematic camera the HDW-F900 back in 1999. The industry and its crew have been providing us with sensational productions in cinemas and in our homes for years, and at a time where this industry has seen its productions halted due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we want to support and provide them with new knowledge and immediate first-hand guidance as they head into their shooting season.”

The structure of the program and courses

There will be three CineAlta Club sessions run by Sony specialists and industry professionals:

Crew Call

Online, on-demand, personal support for crews who are using a VENICE camera either for the first time, or would like an update on the latest software, tips, and tricks. Support offered by Richard Lewis, Chief Engineer, via phone or Microsoft Teams or on request at Sony’s DMPC facility at Pinewood Studios, UK. Suitable for DP’s, DIT’s, operators, and ACs. Final insights

Glad to see this new educational pathway by Sony, in order to enhance the cinematography knowledge regarding its Cinema Line ecosystem. In the last year, due to COVID, we witnessed many educational online initiatives created by camera manufacturers, as face-to-face courses were not possible. In a professional production, vast knowledge is required to utilize correctly the cameras. Thus, educational programs like the CineAlta Club, REDucation, and ARRI Academy offered by the manufacturers, are truly essential.
