Two of the most intriguing winners of the 72nd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards (in our opinion) are Avid and ON Semiconductor. The awards are given for the achievements of developing new technologies and exceptional standards that improve methodologies that affect the TV industry. Although they’re more than 50 winners, we’ve decided to focus on Avid and On Semiconductor.
Emmy Technology & Engineering Awards
The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards are awarded to a living individual, a company, or a scientific or technical organization for developments and/or standardization involved in engineering technologies that either represent so extensive an improvement on existing methods or are so innovative in nature that they materially have affected television. “The Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards have always recognized the talented and innovative leaders and companies that have made the incredible world of television possible,” said Robert Seidel, Chair, Technology & Engineering Committee, NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences). Known examples for the prize are Apple ProRes, CODEX HDE (High-Density Encoding) technologies, and the Canon for its ME20F-SH super sensitive Full-HD camera. These achievements allow the progress in TV technologies from all aspects – production and post productions.
ON Semiconductor: The sensor of the ARRI ALEXA camera
ON Semiconductor is among the winners of the 72nd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards. We’re all well familiar with their sensors. Actually, the ALEXA camera is powered by the ALEV III image sensor, which was designed and manufactured by ON Semiconductor. ON Semiconductor designed the ALEV III CMOS Image Sensor specifically for ARRI. and if I’m not mistaken, this is the 3rd time that ON accepts the Emmy Technology & Engineering Award. As ARRI stated before: “Our success with ALEXA reflects directly on the strong partnership we continue to enjoy with ON Semiconductor for this critical imaging component”. This time, ON Semiconductor, is receiving the award for its “Invention and Pioneering Development of Intra-Pixel Charge Transfer CMOS Image Sensors”.
Avid: Honored with Two Emmy Awards
Avid takes two Emmy Technology & Engineering Awards, which means being honored for its work on Newsroom Computer System (NRCS), used to plan and automate the production of news programs, and for work on the Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) specification, which ensures multi-vendor, cross-platform interoperability in video production. “These two Emmy Award wins honor this special collaborative spirit that keeps the whole industry moving forward,” said Jeff Rosica, CEO & President, Avid. “Avid is also incredibly fortunate to be home to an extraordinarily creative and inspired engineering workforce and product team. Their continuous innovation not only follows through on our customers’ vision but also consistently breaks new ground to establish categories and define where the industry needs to go next.” Furthermore, Avid has just celebrated the millstone of downloading more than 3 million copies of the ‘First’ versions of Avid’s Creative Tools by video and music producers, which is quite an impressive achievement.
Summary
The 72nd Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards ceremony will take place in partnership with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) as part of their fall NAB Show on October 10, 2021 (delayed due to COVID). Indeed, it’s essential to express gratitude for the companies who work hard by R&D-ing and manufacturing the technologies that drive our industry forward. For instance, have a look at the Scientific and Technical Awards of the Oscar, which includes also many awe-inspiring technologies. This ceremony goes live in a few days (in case you don’t want to wait till NAB). See it here.
