Finally, The Suicide Squad trailer is here. This filmmaking madness was directed by James Gunn, and shot by Henry Braham on the Vista Vision RED’s sensors (Ranger Monstro and Weapon VV), accompanied by the Baby Dragon (Komodo). All that goodness was stitched for the IMAX because “That’s the best way to see it” as Gunn said.
The Suicide Squad
The Suicide Squad is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics team of the same name. Produced by DC Films, and set for distribution by Warner Bros. Pictures, it is intended to be a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016) and the tenth film in the DC Universe. The film was written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi. In the film, the Suicide Squad is sent to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. The cinematographer is Henry Braham which was the cinematic partner of Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Shot for the IMAX on RED Monstro and Komodo
The film was shot entirely on RED ecosystem (=Arsenal) as stated by Gunn: “We shot The Suicide Squad on the Red Ranger Monstro 8K VV and the Red Weapon 8K VV & we were the first feature film to use the new Red Komodo”.

Not sure about the last statement as there’re more films that were shot on Komodo before (6 Underground, Matrix 4). Anyway, Gunn added that: “The Red cameras give the film the intense look we needed & they’re small enough to utilize some new rigs invented for the movie (some descendants of the Stabileye, first used on Vol 2, later used on the beautiful 1917). So excited about where the look landed”.

Komodo on Stabileye Nano
A few months ago, RED Digital Cinema CEO, Jarred Land posted on REDUser a cool BTS picture straight from the set of The Suicide Squad, of the Komodo camera on a unique stabilizer. According to Jarred, it’s the Stabileye Nano utilized by Braham. This stabilizer can’t be purchased and was specially made for the film. Check it out below.
IMAX Certified (Komodo?)
Furthermore, Gunn stated that The Suicide Squad was filmed entirely with IMAX-certified RED cameras, and this will be the first R-rated movie to be filmed entirely in IMAX.
Yes. The whole film was shot in @IMAX & that’s the best way to see it. https://t.co/ECu7E8LBTM

We’ve reported here previously about the new “Film In IMAX” program that certifies specific cameras to be used on IMAX dedicated productions (Read: IMAX Launches “Filmed In IMAX” Program – Welcomes ARRI, RED, Panavision, and Sony. As we know, the only RED camera that is certified by IMAX is the RED Ranger MONSTRO. Is the Komodo IMAX Certified as well? According to IMDB Tech Spec, there’s a RED Komodo IMAX. However, we don’t sure about that…
The Suicide Squad is scheduled to be released theatrically and on the streaming platform HBO Max in the United States on August 6, 2021. Check out the first trailer below:
