We analyzed IndieWire’s survey regarding the cameras and lenses used to shoot more than 50 selected features premiering at Cannes 2021. Cooke leads the way. Angenieux is the second most used optics, especially with its Optimo Zooms that were utilized broadly on Cannes 2021’s selected projects. The rest in the list are Canon Zooms, ARRI, Zeiss and Panavision. All others are very unique and rare optics (over 60 species of glass). Explore the charts below.

Cannes Film Festival 2021’s cinematography

IndieWire reached out to the directors of photography whose feature films are premiering at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival to find out which cameras and lenses they used. Y.M.Cinema Magazine took that data and built dedicated graphs and charts in order to search after a tendency, and hopefully, to find a new one.

This article is focused on the lenses. In case you’d like to read about Cannes 2021’s cameras, make sure to see out graphs and charts in the previous article: Cannes Film Festival 2021’s Cameras: Diversity is the Key. To learn more about why those tools were chosen per project, head over to the comprehensive IndieWire survey which elaborates more on the making.

Discussion

The graph demonstrates a solid diversity regarding the lenses being used to shoot Cannes 2021’s features. The data shows over 60 species of lenses which is huge comparing to other cameras and lenses surveys made on previous main filmmaking events (Explore our charts about Oscars, Sundance, Cannes, Golden Globe, and Netflix). This is not surprising though, as the Cannes 2021 camera chart shows a high diversity as well, and from here, the diversity of the lenses is derived. Most of the time, selected films on major Independent film festivals are known for that kind of diversity regarding the tools been picked by the creators of the films. The most suited comparison is the glass used to shoot Sundance 2021 selected films (read: The Lenses Behind Sundance 2021: Superspeeds, Panchros and Canon’s Zooms). However, even in Sandunce, the diversity was lower (regarding cameras and lenses). The main winner of Cannes is the Angenieux Zoom, which is the most used lens among those filmmakers. Cooke is the leading brand though. Also, there is a vast amount of Canon Zooms as well.
