The hilarious Jared Polin has managed to get his hands on the forthcoming Canon EOS R3. Although Jared was not allowed to do a conventional ‘Unboxing’ since there is no box yet, he did tell us a few interesting facts about this camera. Let’s read between the lines.
EOS R3: The need for speed
Canon has been teasing us beyond normal about the forthcoming EOS R3. However, we know from the Product Business Developer at Canon Italia, that the R3 is all about, and was made for – Speed. This feature (=speed) is based on advanced AI technologies, that utilize Canon’s brand new self-developed 35mm FF, back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor. Unfortunately, most probably that these ‘Speed’ advantages will be more relevant to stills shooters rather than videographers. For instance, the Canon EOS R3’s viewfinder incorporates a few patentable technologies and thus, constitutes big news for photographers, but for them only.
Flagship or not a flagship
One of the main questions asked is if the EOS R3 can be (or might be) defined as ‘flagship’. Well, it depends. And that’s what we’ll explore further in Jared’s video. Rumors suggest that the sensor is 24Mp which has been a disappointment for many professionals. Thus, the camera can’t be suggested as a flagship. On the other hand, it doesn’t have to counteraction the definition of a flagship, but to a certain market, and that’s us (videographers and cinematographers).

First ‘Hands-On Unboxing’ video
The YT guy, Jared polio, has managed to get his hands on the Canon EOS R3 for an unofficial unboxing video. Well, it’s not ‘unboxing’ per definition, but more than a superficial physical review. So what’s new? Basically, a few things: First, the user interface was designed for efficiency. For instance, the Smart Controller and the Joystick do the same thing and have the exact same function, which is weird but covers more user-experience options. Second, the mentioned ultra-advanced viewfinder is huge and very effective. Last but not least is the weight. The EOS R3 weights fraction of the 1D X Mark III. This was made in order to grant photographers a lighter camera, as compared to its much heavier DSLR big sister (1D X Mark III). BTW, videographers prefer a heavier camera since it stabilizes better when shooting handheld. Thus, this is another mark, that the EOS R3 was made to satisfy professional photographers rather than videographers. Furthermore, Jared adds that there is no reason to purchase the 1D X Mark III anymore since it’s a less advanced and much heavier camera. If so, the EOS R3 will cannibalize the flagship 1D X Mark III which will lead to a reduction in price. If so, we expect a price drop of the 1 D X Mark III as the moment the EOS R3 ships.
Check out Jared video below:
What do you think about the EOS R3? Is it really made only for photographers rather than videographers? Do you think this will cause to a big drop in 1D X Mark III prices?

Saludos!
I think this is a camera mainly for action photographers. However the R3 also has good video specs. If we look back just 5 years ago who would have thought that a less than € 6,000 camera the size of the R3 would have all those video capabilities. I am a hybrid shooter who does more video than photography and I think the R3 will be an excellent camera for photographers who also do some video. If you are mainly a Videographer I think there are other more interesting options for € 6000 such as Sony fx6, Canon C70 and so on … Saludos!
Seems a redundant camera with a couple of gimmicks. All about speed? Do they not know that A1 was released a year ago? Do they not know that that has a 50 megapixel sensor too? Yeah, no thanks.
