‘Jade 4C-Die’. This is the codename for the 2022 Mac Pro. Jade C-Die= M1 Max. Hence, Jade 4C-Die= M1 Max multiply by four. To make the story short, the upcoming Mac Pro will have the power of four M1 Max MacBook Pros. A simple calculation shows it will allow editing of up to 120 streams of 4K and 28 streams of 8K ProRes videos. Do we really need all that power?
2022 Mac Pro: Codenamed Jade 4C-Die
According to Bloomberg, the 2022 Mac Pro desktop is expected to come in at least two variations: 2X and 4X the number of CPU and GPU cores as the M1 Max. That’s up to 40 CPU cores and 128 GPU cores on the high-end. The new MacBook Pros are codenamed Jade C-Die (=M1 Max). However, Codenamed Jade 2C-Die and Jade 4C-Die, indicate on 2022 redesigned Mac Pro (20 or 40 computing core variations accordantly), made up of 16 high-performance or 32 high-performance cores and four or eight high-efficiency cores. The chips would also include either 64 core or 128 core options for graphics. The 2022 Mac Pro is in the works and is expected to look like a smaller version of the current design, which was launched in 2019. The unified architecture allows more compact design, and thus, more advantages regarding heat management. Although this information is not new, we now know the potential of the M1 Max chips and their performances on the MacBook Pros. Therefore, we can estimate more accurately their effects on the 2022 Mac Pro.
X4 M1 Max: Editing 28 streams of 8K ProRes videos
The M1 Max MacBook Pro is capable of editing up to 30 streams of 4K ProRes video or up to 7 streams of 8K ProRes video in Final Cut Pro. Hence, the upcoming Mac Pro will be capable of editing up to 120 streams of 4K and 28 streams of 8K ProRes videos. The 2019 Mac Pro’s Afterburner will not be relevant anymore as a product per se, as it’s burned into the unified architecture. The Afterburner was designed to be paired with Intel, but the upcoming Mac Pro will not need one.
Price?
You all know that a maxed-out Mac Pro costs $50,000. Well, we should expect that the 2022 SOC Mac Pro will be priced at a much more affordable price tag, and thus, will probably be a lot cheaper, but will have much more power. The question remains why should anyone purchase the 2019 Mac Pro, and what’s the future of the $2,000 Afterburner card, that is been considered obsolete from now. Also, what will be the target market of the 2022 SOC Mac Pro? For now, there’s no defined target market for that. However, in 2022 and beyond, we might explore higher resolutions than 8K, that will have to be imported into an NLE. So that’s your answer: The next Mac Pro will be ready to deal with 12K RAW and beyond.
