Today, Atomos announced the AtomOS 10.71. This update for NINJA V and NINJA V+ monitor-recorder devices introduces ProRes RAW format recording options for the legacy Sony FS series. Furthermore, the update is also relevant to Canon EOS R5 and the Panasonic LUMIX BS1H, making them ProRes RAW compatible. All details are below.

ProRes RAW on Sony FS

According to Atomos, there’s been a high level of anticipation and interest to pair the compact form factor of the 5” HDR monitor-recorder with the Sony FS series cameras. The NINJA V+ Pro-Kit (or NINJA V+ with the AtomX SDI Unit and SDI RAW activation) now support the recording of ProRes RAW from the FS5 (Paid RAW upgrade from Sony required), FS5MKII, FS700 (Paid RAW upgrade from Sony required as well), and FS700r with continuous output directly from the sensor up to 2K 240fps, 4K 60fps and 4K 120fps for 4s bursts. RAW output at 4K 60fps and 2K up to 240fps can also be added to the Sony FS7 or FS7MKII with the addition of the XDCA-FS7 module.

Sony FS-Series ProRes RAW recording

Combined with the Atomos Ninja V+ Pro-Kit or Ninja V+ (SDI Module attached), select Sony FS- Series cameras can now record ProRes RAW in DCI 4K and 2K.

  • 4K (4096 x 2160) at 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p, 60p, 100p*, 120p*
  • 2K (2048 x 1080) at 100p, 120p, 200p, 240p

  • 2K (2048 x 1080) at 100p, 120p, 200p, 240p

Sony FS7 (with XDCA-FS7) / Sony FS7 II (with XDCA-FS7):

Canon EOS R5: 5K ProRes RAW with Ninja V

Although it was well documented that the Canon EOS R5 is capable of 8K ProRes RAW (Watch: 8K ProRes RAW Footage of the Canon EOS R5, and Canon EOS R5 Overheating Test: Passed! (More Than 1.5 Hours of 8K RAW Recording Time)), this capability is allowed with the more expensive Ninja V+. However, AtomOS 10.71 allows ProRes RAW recording (5K, and NOT 8K) with the Ninja V as well. As stated by Atomos: “The combination of the Canon EOS R5 with the Atomos NINJA V yields recordings of up to 5K RAW at an unprecedented price point. The EOS R5 capitalizes on the heritage of the Canon’s full-frame cameras to deliver next-generation advances in image quality, performance, and reliability”.

Panasonic LUMIX BS1H and ProRes RAW

The LUMIX BS1H is the new boxy cinema camera by Panasonic (Read: Panasonic Announces the LUMIX BS1H: 6K, Full-Frame Box-Style Cinema Camera). Adding the NINJA V or the NINJA V+ to a Panasonic LUMIX BS1H rig allows recordings of 5.9K 30fps, 4.1K 60fps, and 3.5K 50fps anamorphic. As stated by Atomos: “The LUMIX BS1H combines stunning cinema-quality video performance of the full-frame LUMIX S1H, including impressive bokeh, low-light performance, a wide dynamic range of 14+ stops V-Log and network connectivity. By uniting the LUMIX BS1H with the NINJA V/V+ filmmakers can be sure the image they see in the image they record”. When combined with the Atomos Ninja V+, the LUMIX BS1H can record up to 5.9Kp30, 4.1Kp60, and 3.5Kp50 anamorphic ProRes RAW.
