Canon USA’s official Twitter account has published a post titled: READY FOR ANYTHING” with the logo of its Cinema EOS System. The “Big Announcement” is going to happen on January 19th at 7:00 (EST). Is it going to be a new Cinema EOS 8K camera?
Canon Cinema EOS – “Big Announcement”
Canon is going to make a “Big Announcement” regarding its Cinema EOS System. According to trusted resources, this announcement will present the latest Canon Cinema EOS System. We assume that this will be an official announcement of the Cinema EOS 8K Camera which we reported here before. The 8K cinema camera was spotted in Canon’s Japan YouTube channel, and the video has been removed shortly after. Moreover, back then Canon stated: “Canon is working to develop 8K solutions in anticipation of further advances in image expression. A compact, lightweight 8K camera that can be used in a variety of shooting styles”. Sure, there’s the EOS R5. However, Canon wanted to create a more professional, cinema-oriented machine for that purpose.
EOS 8K Cinema Camera
We already know the structure and design of the EOS 8K Cinema Camera. The camera is being operated in Japan, in order to deliver 8K content for the Japanese market. The camera looks very similar to the C200/c300, which means, lightweight and compact. However, according to the reported model, the camera owns a cumbersome 8K conversion box. Nevertheless, in the new and improved model, this strange box will be eliminated since Canon has accumulated some solid knowledge on how to produce 8K RAW content. Full specs were revealed as well
In August we’ve reported that the specs of the Canon Cinema EOS 8K camera (“8K professional camera” as Canon defines it), have been quietly published by Canon Japan. Also, a bunch of 8K videos that were captured by the camera, were published in Canon Imaging Plaza YouTube channel, which is one of Canon’s official channels. Furthermore, the specs of the Canon Cinema EOS 8K were spotted as well. Here’re the key features:
- Sensor: 35.39MP, Super 35 in-house developed 8K CMOS that can output 8K RAW at 60FPS
- Focus: Manual, AF, face detection
- Lens mount: EF and PL
- RAW: It says that the camera uses the same RAW as Cinema EOS 4K RAW (not Canon RAW which is the most recent RAW flavor developed by Canon). Furthermore, the RAW is recorded externally to a dedicated recorder
- Design: According to Canon, the body design follows the EOS C300 Mark II, as well as the menu and user interface.
- Mobility: The body weighs 1.9Kg in order to maintain compactness and to elevate compatibility regarding rigs and stabilizers.

Final thoughts
Canon can announce a different product in the next week. However, we hardly believe it’s not going to be the Cinema EOS 8K because every sign and piece of evidence indicates it. We also can’t be sure if this new product will be defined as flagship in the Cinema EOS lineup and replace the C500 Mark II. However, these are our two cents. What do you think?
Product List
Here’re the products mentioned in the article, and the links to purchase them from authorized dealers.
- Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Digital Camera
- Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II Camcorder Body with Dual Pixel CMOS AF (EF Lens Mount)
- Canon EOS C500 Mark II 5.9K Full-Frame Camera Body
You’re wrong. LOL! Reasonable guess, though.
Not being able to record raw internally seems like such a dumb problem. Their mirrorless cameras can do it, why can’t their new top cine camera? Especially considering past cine cameras have done.
