Leaked images spotted on CanonRumors, indicate that the Canon EOS R5 C will be armed with vents for heat dissipation in order to allow continuous 8K recording. If so, the Canon EOS R5 C should be called EOS R5 V (‘V’ for ‘Vents’ ) instead of ‘C’ for Cinema. Don’t you think?
Canon EOS R5 C
The announcement of the new Cinema EOS camera by Canon is going to happen in 10 hours from the time I’m writing this article. Canon promises a new Cinema EOS that ‘See No Limits’. A few days ago, we thoughts that Canon will announce its 8K Cinema EOS camera that is being extensively utilized in Japan. But we were wrong. According to tons of rumors, Canon is going to announce a new Cinema EOS breed titled R5 C. However, judging by the name, is not entirely new, since it’s connected to the R5 model, but with a ‘C’, for Cinema. So what does this ‘C’ give us? Well, according to rumors, not much.
EOS R5 C = R5+Vents
Just an hour ago, CanonRumor has uploaded a bunch of leaked pictures of the new EOS Cinema Camera. Indeed, we can explore a camera that looks very same as the R5, but with a thick back, that exposes a heat dissipation apparatus. It pretty much reminds Tilta’s cooling module that was designed for the R5. The leaked specs confirmed that one of the major features of the EOS R5 C is to allow filmmakers to record continuous 8K videos. Moreover, CanonRumors has published a description of the new Canon. I believe it’s Google Translated from Japanese. Check it out below:
“A True Hybrid Camera”
This is the description: “Compact and lightweight, the EOS R5 C is a true hybrid camera, boasting many of the video formats and features from the Cinema EOS lineup as well as many of the still capabilities of the EOS R5 camera in a beautifully designed body. The EOS R5 C is a complete package that offers filmmakers, multimedia journalists, and advanced amateurs a cost-effective 8K, 4K, and UHD camera to help unlock their creative potential”.
8K 60p RAW
Here’s more of that description: “Canon’s 45 Megapixel full-frame, CMOS imaging sensor is at the heart of the EOS R5 C camera’s superb image quality, which also leads the way for an impressive 8K/60P RAW cinematic video shooting. Focus and speed are paramount in the EOS R5 C camera, providing impressive continuous capture at speeds of up to 20 frames per second and with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II capability to track split-second movements of even the most elusive subjects. It is easy to photograph people with the use of Eye, Face and Head Detection AF, or intuitively track the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds with Animal Detection AF. For those with the need for speed, Canon has also included vehicle subject detection to assist with accurate tracking of cars and motorcycles”.

So what’s new?
Well, it’s well known that Design=Functionality. Thus, the main difference compared to the excellent R5 is the heat dissipation mechanism. Canon worked hard in order to allow filmmakers to record continuous 8K RAW. But the Canon EOS R5 (not ‘C’) does that already. The overheating issues were solved thanks to Atomos. With the recent camera firmware v1.4 update, the Canon EOS R5 is capable of outputting ProRes RAW over HDMI to a Ninja V+ at up to 8Kp30 and 5Kp60. All the heating issues of the Canon EOS R5 are eliminated since the Ninja V+ absorbs all the heat, and allows continuous 8K RAW recording. Hence, the EOS R5 C doesn’t have any significant advantages in that regard. However, the R5 needs the Ninja V+, whereas the C model manages the heat internally, and outputs Canon’s RAW instead of external ProRes RAW. That’s basically it. If so, according to what we have on the table, is a slightly improved model of the R5. Making use of the letter ‘C’ here might be a bit of overrating by Canon, for marketing purposes obviously. Canon should consider replacing the letter with ‘V’ for vents.
Closing thoughts
Sorry for being sarcastic, but although the new EOS R5 C looks amazing like all Canon’s products, there’s not much new under the sun. The R5 C is an R5 with unlimited internally 8K RAW recording and that’s basically it. We’ll update the article when more info comes out, including price and availability.
Product List
Here’re the products mentioned in the article, and the links to purchase them from authorized dealers.
- Canon EOS R5 C
- Canon EOS R5
Don’t forget that the 5c records 60 FPS at 8k which ist crucial for VR and other tasks. Also mind that the Ninja only records ProRes RAW at 8k and no other (compressesd) format at all… Not every usecase needs that but File sizes are beyond everything.
Oh and of course the R5 IS recording Up to 30 minutes Maximum. Do a Concert or Long Interview this way…
