Netflix has just approved the Sony VENICE 2 8K cinema camera for its original productions. The VENICE 2 is the tenth Sony camera being approved by Netflix. However, it’s an obvious step since the original VENICE is approved as well. Let’s take a look at the ‘Netflix Approved’ settings.
Sony VENICE 2: Netflix Approved
The Sony VENICE 2 joins the prestige list of Netflix Approved cameras. Although it was a very expected move, it was pretty quick as well. The VENICE 2 was intoriduced five months ago as the more sophisticated 8K version of the 6K sensor. The VENICE 2 owns an 8.6K VENICE 2 sensor that can shoot and record 8.6K footage (16-stop dynamic range) at 30 fps and 8.2K in either 17:9 or 16:9 at up to 60 fps. Its sensor raises the camera’s dual-range base ISO to 800/3200. Furthermore, the 8.6K sensor can be swapped with the 6K sensor from the original VENICE to allow for higher frame recording with the original camera. Summary
It seems that Netflix is in the process to approve new cameras for its 4K originals. Last week Netflix has approved the Panasonic LUMIX BS1H. As for new cinema cameras, we’re waiting for the RED V-Raptor, Canon EOS R5 C and Panasonic GH6 to be approved as well. Just to emphasize that a Netflix project can be shot with unapproved cameras. If so, what’s the essence to get Netflix approval? Well, it’s like a prestige stamp and that’s basically all. There’re numerous Netflix projects that were shot on film. For instance, read our article: Don’t Look Up: Aaton Penelope and Kowa Cine Prominar Macros for the Extreme Closeups which is a leading Netflix film that was shot on unapproved cameras (There are ZERO film cameras that have been approved by Netlfix). So it does matter, and it doesn’t. To sum it up, it’s just something to brag on, and nothing more. Do you agree?
