RED has announced an S35 (Super 35) version of its flagship, the V-Raptor. This camera is still being tested by RED. Furthermore, the shipping of the Raptor XL will begin in August. Read CEO Jarred Land’s statement below.
S35 is back in the game
As we’re dealing with FF (Full-Frame) sensors that are growing like mushrooms, it seems that S35 (Super 35) is back in the game again. Next week ARRI is going to announce its brand new S35 beast /flagship (all details here), and RED has just announced the testing phase for a Super 35 version of the Raptor.
The Raptor 8K S35 sensor is out of the oven and I’m testing it up in Big Sur with the foxes.

Raptor 8K S35
So, why develop an S35 version if the main characteristic of the Raptor is its full-frame sensor? Well, why not? We can think about the new Raptor 8K S35 as Helium was to Monstro. RED CEO Jarred Land has just said this: “The Raptor 8K S35 sensor is out of the oven and I’m testing it up in Big Sur with the foxes. We need to know what format you need want to see in S35 first”. As for the price we can expect a price tag between the Komodo and the Raptor VV.
Later today we are going to open up reservations for Raptor XL on RED.com for shipping beginning of August.

Raptor XL is ready to roll into production
Another announcement made just now from RED, is the shipping date of the V-Raptor XL. As stated by Land: “With supply chain finally showing a sliver of relief and XL ready to roll into production, later today we are going to open up reservations for Raptor XL on RED.com for shipping beginning of August. Made some nice improvements to XL along the way with all the waiting… as you can see the PL mount is now milled out of titanium…XL or Standard body size as we don’t want to push our luck with the supply chain right out of the gate by making both. We will add both sizes to the reservation page so you all can decide”. The V-Raptor XL is an “All-in-one system, suited for studio configurations and high-end productions. Includes internal ND filter, 24v aux power, interchangeable lens mount, and more”. The price is $39,500. For now, there’s no option to reserve the XL, however, we’ll update the article when it will.
Update (28/5/22): Reservations for the V-Raptor XL are now open on the RED website. Shipping in August. Price: $39,500. Also, there’s a Production Pack (ready to shoot kit). The price for the Production Pack is $45,000. All details are here.

Exciting times.
I wonder what the actual sensor dimensions will be, because red’s super35 sensors tend to be much bigger than most other manufacturers.
