A solid rumor indicates that the next MonsterVerse of Godzilla & Kong will be shot on IMAX MSM 70mm film cameras with Panavised Canon 1200 lenses. That would be the first MonsterVerse film to be shot in the 15/70 format.

Godzilla & Kong

The production of the ultra-anticipated sequel to MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong, has wrapped. Director Adam Wingard was called back to direct the movie, starring Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Dan Stevens, and Fala Chen. The film hits theaters on March 15, 2024. The principal photography commenced in Gold Coast, Queensland on July 29, 2022. At the start of production, Ben Seresin, which is Wingard’s cinematic partner, was confirmed to have returned as director of photography. In November 2022, it was reported that filming had wrapped in Australia and that crew gear revealed the film’s potential title as Godzilla and Kong. It must be noted that this is a great achievement for Wingard since Godzilla vs. Kong is Wingard’s second mega-budget project.

The first MonsterVerse to be shot on IMAX 15/70

According to a trusty resource (K-D-M on Twitter), the film was shot on IMAX MSM film cameras. Furthermore, IMAX stated in its Q3 2022 Financial Results that IMAX film cameras were used to shoot this MonsterVerse sequel. If so, this will be the first MonsterVerse film to be shot in the mighty 15/70 format. However, BTS leaks show other cameras as well. BTW, the previous Godzilla vs. Kong was shot on the ALEXA 65 paired with the Prime DNA lenses. Below you can find a leaked video of the behind-the-scenes of  Godzilla & Kong:

Panavised Canon 1200

Another interesting rumor is about the glass behind Godzilla & Kong. K-D-M talks about the Panavised Canon 1200 lens for some shots. This very unique setup was used before by cinematographer Mandy Walker’s ASC, ACS on The Mountains Between Us. Below you can find a picture demonstrating the customized Canon EF 1200mm T 5.6 telephoto lens. Panavision converted this still lens to a spherical fully mechanically linked cam drive focus and non-electronic iris mechanism with a 2700mm focal length for the film. The lens was later again converted to a 2400mm anamorphic. It will be intriguing to explore the setup of the Panavised Canon 1200 in the forthcoming MonsterVerse, in case this rumor is accurate.

Post Game Questions

  1. What are the chances that a Panavised Canon 1200 will be paired with the IMAX MSM?
  2. Will Godzilla & Kong be screened in a 70mm full 1.43:1 ratio?
