Sony Cinema Line for Cinematic Broadcasting

Cinematic Broadcasting is the new and hot jargon. It defines the utilization of top-tier cinema cameras in order to capture live events. The goal is to apply cinematic imagery, rich colors, shallow depth of field, high dynamic range, and other cinematic characteristics to live events. That requires capturing the event by using cinema cameras and decimated lenses, rather than conventional capturing by broadcast (small sensor) cameras. In fact, ARRI announced the ALEXA 35 Live last month, especially for these purposes. In this case study, top Sony Cinema Line cameras were utilized to shoot the Coppa Italia Final (The final of the 2024 Coppa Italia Frecciarossa determined the winner (Juventus) of the 77th edition of Italy’s premier football competition, between finalists Atalanta and Juventus, which took place on May 15 at 9 p.m. in Rome’s legendary Stadio Olimpico). The cameras are VENICE 2, BURANO, and FR7.

Tech brings the stadium’s emotions to life

As stated by Sony: “Lega Serie A used cutting edge Sony cameras and technology systems for Italy’s biggest football event of the year, the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa final on Wednesday 15 May, with equipment which brings the drama and emotion of the stadium to life in a way never seen before. This is the third consecutive year that Lega Serie A and Sony have created contexts at the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa final to evaluate innovative shooting technology applications to enhance the content’s spectacular qualities. The strong spirit of collaboration has resulted in a solid partnership to drive the use of new techniques for sporting events to provide ever-new beautiful game excitement. For this year’s final, the partnership has grown into a large-scale filming operation, using cinematography techniques and equipment to highlight the drama, improve on-screen detail, and capture the emotions of high-stakes moments.

Combination of VENICE 2, BURANO, and FR7

According to Sony, the highlight technologies being employed there are:

  1. The Sony VENICE 2: Sony said there’s a ‘LIVE’ configuration of the camera to bring a full Cinematic look to the images, with creative shots designed to emphasize the depth of field and elevate color details.
  2. The go-to BURANO camera, used at the field’s edge on Gimbal, captures up close players’ emotions and depth of the pitch, by leveraging the built-in image stabilizer and autofocus technologies;
  3. Capturing the drama and emotion in the player’s tunnel with an FR7-Sony’s full-frame, interchangeable lens PTZ camera.

Hence, we can explore a solid combination of how to utilize each camera based on its strengths and advantages while shooting Live events. The flagship VENICE 2 was paired with the mighty Fujinon Box lens 25-1000 which has been designed for this kind of shooting. The BURANO that sits between FX9 and the acclaimed VENICE was paired with a gimbal for the dynamic shots (see picture above), and the unique full-frame PTZ FR7 was applied remotely. That’s a beautiful cinematic orchestra!

The Coppa Italia Frecciarossa is one of Europe’s biggest football events so it’s really exciting to get involved with bringing the action to fans across the world and working with Lega Serie A and their partners has been a real pleasure. We are constantly pushing technological boundaries to create the best viewer experience ahead of the final, and hope that this set up really brings across the excitement, drama, and beauty of the beautiful game.
