Blackmagic Design has just published a test shoot of its new PYXIS 6K boxy cinema camera. It looks pretty stunning. But when will it ship?
Blackmagic PYXIS 6K
In April (NAB 2024) Blackmagic Design introduced its next-generation customizable cinema camera, the PYXIS 6K, a high-end digital film camera that produces precise skin tones and rich organic colors. PYXIS 6K features an extremely versatile design that lets you build the perfect camera rig for your production. It’s armed with a full frame 36 x 24mm 6K sensor with a wide dynamic range and a built-in optical low pass filter designed to perfectly match the sensor. Plus there are 3 models available in either EF, PL, or L-Mount. As stated by the company: “Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K Cinema Box Camera takes the digital film innovations of the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K and turns it into a box-style cinema camera with a lockable Canon EF lens mount and customizable side plates. With its expanded full-frame sensor, a full-frame 6K sensor captures rich colors, accurate skin tones, and a wide 13-stop dynamic range. The PYXIS can film up to 6K Open Gate 3:2 video at 36 fps or 6K Anamorphic 6:5 video at 60 fps, among other selectable resolutions.

Test footage
Although Blackmagic shared some PYXIS 6K footage before, it has decided to do a test shoot just before shipping. The camera was supposed to be shipped in July till the end of August. Hence, this test shoot might be an indication of the upcoming shipping date. Check it out below:
Well, it wasn’t shot by John this time, but still needs 2-4 stops more. The faces need more life and feel monochrome. No 8k-16k, so not so great for high end film like stills. Don’t want to wait another 10 years for the blindingly obvious.
Washed out bright looks are too ubiquitous and boring. Contrast & definition is much more interesting but too each their own.
Buy some lights. You have no business behind a camera if you can’t use light.
If the screen flipped out and the mounts were user-swappable I would be ordering 2 of these.
The Arri Alexa screen doesn’t flip out. And even if the screen flipped out you’d still need an external monitor.
People are obnoxious.
Mounts being swappable is nice though.
