In between the lines, we can understand that Nikon eagerly wants to develop global shutter cameras. In the recent RED’s CEO statements, Keiji (the new CEO) praises the global shutter technology of the RED cameras. Is this the new direction of Nikon?
Nikon to develop a global shutter cinema camera?
Former RED Digital Cinema CEO, Jarred Land, approached RED shooters via social media. However, Nikon is not like that. Nikon is a huge company with a more conservative marketing approach, which means, releasing press releases by stating the new RED’s CEO, Keiji Oishi. Thus, in between the lines, we can assume that Nikon is interested in global shutter technology. Here are a few quotes by Keiji derived from recent press releases. The first is regarding the IBC: ”RED is proud to be at the forefront of global shutter technology, and we’re thrilled to present these advancements at IBC. Our commitment to pushing the boundaries of image capture technology and bringing the RED cinematic look to broadcast is truly exciting. We can’t wait to connect with our friends and community at IBC, hear their insights, and showcase how we’re shaping the future of visual storytelling”. And here’s another one: “Global shutter sensor, offers the ability to shoot the most natural and organic imagery possible”. And another one related to the new price drops of the Komodo: “RED’s KOMODO lineup has only grown in popularity over the years. Since joining RED, I have heard filmmakers rave about KOMODO’s small form factor and the amazing performance of the global shutter sensor. We’re excited to introduce this new pricing which lowers the hurdle for a new group of filmmakers to take advantage of the exceptional cinema quality and creative possibilities of RED cameras”.
Global shutter as the highlight
Hence, in between the lines, our two cents are that Nikon is interested in learning the global shutter technology and developing it further. Therefore, it’s not just about the R3D/REDCODE RAW, but about cracking the tech principles of the global shutter sensor itself and making it more suitable for cinema, with higher dynamic range, and better image quality overall. Another logical possibility is that Nikon will utilize the sensor division of RED to improve the global shutter sensor implemented in future Nikon high-end cameras. Is it possible that Nikon bought RED because of the global shutter tech? It might. One thing is for sure: It will be an interesting journey.
I have a list of people I would fire at Red. The occultic graphic crap will be gone. At last the industry can grow again without all the patent games. To patent recording Bayer over 1080p24. How does it stand? How come each time people who should know what they are doing, go to challenge it, then come out not? What other patents are involved?
