Today, NVIDIA has announced a new GPU as part of its new Ampere architecture, the same architecture behind the newly born RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. The new GPU, A6000 is even more powerful to allow creators to complete complex and demanding tasks (12K BRAW anyone?).

NVIDIA  RTX A6000 GPU: 8K HDR editing

The RTX A6000 GPU is built on the new NVIDIA Ampere architecture and allows creators to complete complex creative tasks, such as video editing in 8K HDR in real-time and animating extra-large 3D models. With 48GB, it offers the largest memory available in a single GPU and is expandable to 96GB using NVLink to connect two GPUs. The RTX A6000 is defined by NVIDIA as “The world’s most powerful visual computing GPU for desktop workstations”.

Acceleration of video encoding and decoding

According to NVIDIA, the new RTX A6000 utilizes ideally NVIDIA’s Ampere Architecture CUDA Cores, and thus enhances the performance and security required for multi-stream video applications for broadcast, and video serving with dedicated video encode and decode engines. The RTX A6000 is armed with 48 Gigabytes (GB) of GPU Memory, scalable up to 96 GB with NVLink, which allows creative professionals the large memory necessary to work with massive datasets and workloads. Moreover, the GPU features a dual-slot, power-efficient design, which is up to 2X more power-efficient than Turing GPUs. That allows the privilege to be crafted to fit into a wide range of workstations from worldwide OEM vendors, which are expected from the world’s leading systems manufacturers, including BOXX, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Availability: in mid-December.

Partnering with Blackmagic Design: Optimizing 12K BRAW

It seems that the new GPU has been tested by Blackmagic Design. As stated by president Dan May:  “We were impressed with the significantly better performance we measured on NVIDIA RTX A6000 than the prior generation of GPUs, both with general grading functions as well as our recent AI-based tools. Its 48 gigabytes of main memory greatly enhances Blackmagic RAW 8K and 12K camera workflows, making editing and grading performance fluid”. By analyzing this statement, we can assume getting the A6000 support in the next version of DaVinci Resolve, in order to utilize the 12K BRAW of the new URSA Mini Pro 12K.
