Teradek ACI (Assistant Camera Interface) for RED DSMC2: Like the Sidekick on Steroids

Teradek announced their new product: an ACI (Assistant Camera Interface) for the RED DSMC2 cameras, in order to improve the ability to control camera functions in the field when the touch display is not good enough.

Teradek ACITouchscreens are not ideal

Touchscreen is much more efficient in controlled environment. But try to use it in the field when there are sunlight and other harsh conditions, and you will see that controlling your camera via touchscreen is a true struggle.

There is nothing like pressing a physical button in order to activate camera functionalities.

Sure there is the DSMC2 sidekick, which offers intuitive and integrated control over critical camera parameters and provides full access to basic and advanced menus by rotate dial and functions buttons. This privilege will cost to you $1150.

Yet there is something missing regarding the Sidekick. The display is miniature, the interface is not detailed and not clear enough.

That’s why I find Teradek new ACI most relevant product for the DSMC2. Think of it like a Sidekick on Steroids.

Teradek ACI models

The ACI comes in 3 models:

ACIThe ACI module simplifies camera control and management by combining a smartly-designed software UI with physical controls. The hardware attaches seamlessly to the side of RED DSMC2 cameras and can operate with any DSMC2 I/O module with a CRTL (RS232) port.

Price: $899.95

RF.ACIThe RF.ACI adds a 2.4GHz FHSS radio, allowing the system to be used on camera or as a wireless remote control. Pair the RF.ACI remote with an on-camera RF.ACI, MDR.ACI, or Teradek RT Latitude MDR to configure camera settings at up to 5000 ft away.

Price: $1699.95

MDR. ACIThe MDR.ACI includes every feature of the RF.ACI, in addition to a 3-channel Teradek RT wireless lens control receiver. Combine the MDR.ACI with RT lens motors, controller and a RF.ACI remote for an all-in-one, cutting edge wireless lens and camera control solution.

Price: $2199.95

Basically you have the interface plus the option for radio controlled remote operation (much better and responsive than WiFi control), and for lens control.

The device includes jogwheel and tactile push buttons.

What is most important is that the device owns an ALEXA/Sony like user interface so you can see what you are doing. Everything is much more intuitive.

Conclusion: you can buy the ACI in its simplest version for $900, and get much more than the Sidekick that costs $1150.

  1. […] That’s what happened to Mark L Pederson. Mark has partnered with Teradek to invent and develop an ACI (Assistant Camera Interface) for the RED DSMC2. The Teradek ACI was shipped on September 2018. The ACI module simplifies camera control and management by combining a smartly- designed software UI with physical controls. Mark was inspired by other similar solutions implemented on cinema camera like ARRI and Sony. The mission was to improve the RED’s ACI and to produce more efficient ACI device than the original RED DSMC2 Sidekick, in other words, creating a Sidekick on steroids. […]
