RED has announced a new DSMC2 Gemini kit. The limited edition camera that was dedicated for outer space missions turned out to be one of RED’s most popular camera. That’s why RED decided to offer the Gemini kit that includes everything you need to start shooting with the Gemini.
We made a very special custom S35 low light sensor for a very special customer for use in outer space. Super sensitive ( 2 stops more sensitive than Helium ) Big pixel, 5K @ 96fps and 30.72mm wide by 18mm tall. “Gemini” is a Vampire… Loves the dark…

Gemini the vampire: Only six sensors
The RED Gemini DSMC2 was built in the first place for the outer space. In January 2018 RED revealed the Gemini camera as a low light beast designed primarily for space and dark environments. The camera was produced in a very limited edition (only six sensors were developed). The Gemini was not supposed to be a “normal” RED product which you can purchase in RED stores. However, there was an option to buy the camera in a particular order. Let’s have a look at RED President announcement back at the beginning of 2018: “We made a very special custom S35 low light sensor for a very special customer for use in outer space. Super sensitive ( 2 stops more sensitive than Helium ) Big pixel, 5K @ 96fps and 30.72mm wide by 18mm tall. “Gemini” is a Vampire… Loves the dark but you literally need to put ND’s on it if you want to shoot it in the light. This is quite special and just goes to show how awesome our sensor team is. I was allowed to make 5 extra sensors and put them in some custom ‘almost Black’ DMSC2 bodies so if anyone who shoots mostly in the dark wants to get a little piece of something special ( and ‘subsidized’) let me know. This is not a normal product and is not in the RED stores or on RED.com so you will need to send me an email Jarred@Red.com. “.
Gemini for the crowd
Six months later, RED has announced the Gemini DSMC2 with the option of shooting in the day, by developing the Dual ISO modes of 800 and 3200, which are two separate modes that fundamentally change the way the sensor captures light. From that point, the GEMINI 5K S35 sensor, which started as RED’s limited edition sensor for outer space, is to be offered to the public. As stated by RED President: “The GEMINI 5K S35 sensor started out as our space sensor that offered exceptional low-light performance. But we wanted more… So we spent the last few months, adding a ‘Normal’ mode as well. Now you can shoot in the Day and Shoot in the night”.
Reviewers praised the Gemini for its capabilities and performances in almost every aspect
Best RED camera ever?
The Gemini has earned a lot of recognition in the filmmaking community. Cinematographers love the option of dual ISO and clean imagery even on extremely low light environment. The Gemini is unique in the DSMC2 facility in the way that it can switch native sensitivities. Practically speaking, the Gemini can operate in both typical and dimly lit scenarios without prematurely blown highlights or excessive noise, respectively. Reviewers praised the Gemini for its capabilities and performances in almost every aspect. That’s the reason that RED has decided to build a filmmakers’ kit with all the necessary components to start shooting.
