Sony FX6 4K Cinema Camera: Full-frame?

Sony teased us about the development of this new cinema camcorder. However, besides a picture, we don’t have even a tiny portion of specs. Nevertheless, judging from the picture, we can say that the FX6 will be capable of 4K resolution. There is slightly more information on the B&H website (Sony E mount, built-in ND filter, and removable top handle unit) but this is it. The complete name is Sony PXW-FX6 and it will be released and shipped by the end of 2020. For now, we can only be guessing that the FX6 will be an entry-level product to the newly announced Cinema Line. Although there is no info regarding sensor size, we bet on the FF sensor, since the Cinema Line is focused on FF cinema cameras. Read below.

Yesterday, Sony launched Cinema Line, which is a series of camera products created for, and dedicated to, a wide range of content creators. As stated by Sony: “Cinema Line brings forth innovations and features from Sony’s current VENICE and FX9 cameras to new products with varying form factors, feature sets, and price points. And all of these new cameras will share the Sony DNA of expertise in:

  • Full-frame image sensors – high sensitivity and resolution, wide dynamic range
  • Color science – delivering a rich filmic, cinematic look, with the flexibility to customize creative expression
  • Auto Focus
  • Small and lightweight bodies
  • Professional and intuitive interfaces with improved ergonomics

That characteristics indicate that the upcoming FX6 will be armed with a full-frame sensor as well.
