Good news for RED Komodo shooters: Vocas announces a new product that supports the Canon EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter when attached to the Komodo. The support fits directly on the Vocas side cages and offers a solid stable physical attachment. This solution is supposed to enhance and secure the use of heavy lenses attached to the Canon EF-EOS R 0.71x on Komodo.

Canon C70’s secret weapon

The Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x is an EF to RF Mount Lens Adapter that maintains the original angle of view of a full-frame EF lens when used on the EOS C70. It also increases the light transmission, to offer a one-stop brighter image. The adapter gives the same angle of view when utilizing full-frame lenses on the Super 35mm sensor of the EOS C70, by adapting the focal length by a factor of 0.71x from full-frame format to Super 35mm format. By reducing the focal length of the lens, Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x increases light transmission, effectively increasing the f/stop value of a lens. For example, an F2.8 lens becomes approximately F2.0, for low-light shooting and lower signal noise. Furthermore, full communication between EF lenses and the camera body is maintained. That’s why this adapter can be a powerful tool for the RED Komodo.

For instance, have look at the test below shot on Komodo plus the EF-EOS R 0.71x, and performed by Philip Grossman. The test demonstrates the increase in the field of view and f-stop.

Limited security on the RED Komodo

The Adapter comes with included locking plates to secure the adaptor to the C70 body with four screws. That allows shooting with confidence even when using large and heavy lenses. However, as explained, it was designed for the C70. Attaching the mount to the RED Komodo is possible but keep in mind that the physical connection will no be 100% secured. Thus, when shooting in Run N’ Gun situation with heavy lenses, there’s a risk of physical damage due to the impaired physical connection of the mount to the Komodo body. Fortunately, Vocas gets you covered with its newly announced EF-EOS R 0.71x Adapter support for the RED Komodo.

This brand new product by Vocas allows stable support for the Canon EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter and fits directly on the Vocas side cage when mounted on a RED Komodo. It’s important to note that there’s no product demonstration by Vocas, nevertheless, it looks pretty solid. The support includes four screws connected to the side cage and two screws connected to the Canon adapter. It’s supposed to enhance the physical connection between the mount and the Komodo body.

Price and availability

In order to safely secure the EF-EOS R 0.71x, to the Komodo, you’ll need to purchase the Vocas full cage ($530) or the side cage kit ($220), plus the support itself which costs $175. The Vocas support for EF-EOS R 0.71x adapter on RED Komodo can be purchased via the Vocas website. The product is in stock.

Summary

Although the Canon EF-EOS R 0.71 can be attached to the Komodo without any support, I’d not recommend it, especially when Running N’ Gunning with heavy lenses. For now, the dedicated Vocas support is the way to go. However, keep in mind that it’s not RED Approved (yet). Also, I’d wait for more product demonstrations and tests to validate this support on the field.
