The Sirui Mars 1.33x Anamorphic Lens Set is a sharp and fast anamorphic lens kit designed for Micro 4/3 sensors. The four included focal lengths are 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm. With its 1.33x ratio, the lens takes full advantage of the 16×9 sensor crop that these cameras shoot video in to produce a 2.4:1 aspect ratio.

Anamorphic characteristics

According to Sirui, the lens kit uses an optically distorting anamorphic front element to squeeze the horizontal axis of the shot by 1.33 times which allows for more information to be fit onto the sensor. Sirui states that: “The lens kit reproduces flares beautifully whilst the coatings on the lens keep them from obscuring the entire frame”. The aperture ranges from T2 to T2.9.

Initial thoughts

Although the price of the set is very attractive and affordable ($1,000 per lens), Sirui has managed to manufacture an even more affordable set when the Indiegogo crowdfunding project was active ($750 per lens). However, it’s completely acceptable that after the Indiegogo project is ended, the prices will go higher. Nevertheless, paying $1,000 for a solidly built anamorphic lens (reviewers have been satisfied with the build quality) is considered a very affordable deal, that allows junior filmmakers to try and shoot anamorphic. For full-frame shooters, Sirui plans to release another set dedicated to large format sensors, so stay tuned.
