Vision Research has introduced a new 4K ultra-high-speed camera titled S991. This model is capable of shooting 937 FPS in 4K with the help of CXP-Over-Fiber technology that allows high image quality combined with low noise. Vision Research states that the S991 is built on the power of the mighty Phantom Flex 4K which is being widely used by filmmakers.
Phantom S991
The new Phantom S991 delivers 9 Gpx/sec (70 Gbps) of throughput and the power of the Phantom Flex 4K sensor that is being extensively used by filmmakers. The Phantom S991 utilizes CXP (over-fiber) technology for extremely high-speed imaging. Key features include: Up to 937 fps at 4096 x 2304 (8 bit), and rolling or global shutter 8- and 12-bit selectable.
Data transfer via two fiber cable
The Phantom S991 builds on the industry-leading technology of the S990 by incorporating fiber cables for data transfer. The two fiber cables are easy to connect and can carry up to 70 Gbps of images and data to the frame grabbers. This significantly improves setup and ease of use. Imaging flexibility is enhanced through adjustable capacity settings. Using just 1 fiber cable for 1/2 capacity operation (4 Gpx/sec) allows researchers to achieve full-frame rates at smaller resolutions while full capacity operation (8 Gpx/sec) offers large to maximum resolution for highly detailed imaging.
CXP methodology
CXP-over-fiber delivers the immediately accessible imaging a simple process by dividing it between two frame grabbers then stitching them back together. The image is then stitched back together for fast algorithm application which means no waiting to download data. Explore the tables below for specs and resolution:
Price and availability
The price of the Phantom S991 was not announced. However, these cameras are extremely expensive and only a fraction of the market buys them for consumer use. As for availability, The S991 model can be evaluated by contacting Vision Research directly.
Summary
Although Phantom cameras are mainly designed for scientific applications, the Flex 4K is very well known for its outstanding ultra-high rate imagery. For instance, check out this article: “Indie Filmmaking With the Phantom Flex4K and Cooke S4/i”. Cinematographers can swear that its RAW codec is one of the best. According to Vision Research, the S991 is based on the mighty Flex 4K and offers almost 1000 FPS at 4K as well, but in a more user-friendly form factor. Filmmakers can make marvelous art out of it.
