Wrapping up

The Chronos Q12 and 4K12 are joining the list of affordable ultra high-speed cameras, like Freefly’s WAVE and Ember. Let’s take for example the Q12 since it has a Super 35 sensor. The camera is capable of 2K at 2,800 frames per second, and the price is $20,000. How can it be compared to Freefly’s cameras? Well, the differences between Freefly Ember and WAVE are solid, in every aspect. Both of them incorporate a Super 35mm sensor (Ember has a Gpixel GSPRINT sensor that is capable of 11 stops of DR). WAVE is capable of 4K at 420 FPS, compared to Ember which can shoot 4K (2.37:1) at 1,011 FPS, which is more than twice. The price is higher too. WAVE costs $8,000 compared to Ember which costs $18,000. Hence, Ember seems to be the main competitor of the Chronos Q12. However, Ember shoots 4K, compared to Chronos Q12 which shoots 2K. But Chronos Q12 is capable of 2,800FPS but at a 2K resolution. Nevertheless, Freefly is a much more recognized name in the cinematography and filmmaking industry which is also pivoting into the high-speed imagery market. Furthermore, in our personal opinion, Ember’s footage looks more cinematic compared to Chronos cameras. But that’s mainly because the brand is more recognizable by filmmakers. We couldn’t find filmmaking projects shot on Chronos high-speed cameras —so feel free to send us if you find any films shot on Chronos.
