Fujifilm Builds a 4:3 Cinema EVF Around the ETERNA 55 Open Gate Sensor

Fujifilm has announced the development of the VF-GFXC2, a dedicated electronic viewfinder designed specifically for the GFX ETERNA 55 filmmaking camera. Rather than adapting a conventional widescreen EVF, Fujifilm has built the VF-GFXC2 around the camera’s native 4:3 open gate format. The new viewfinder uses a 2048×1536 OLED panel with a peak brightness of 1000 nits. Its native 4:3 aspect ratio is designed to display the full open gate image produced by the GFX ETERNA 55 sensor without cropping, giving camera operators a viewfinder format that directly matches the camera’s native acquisition mode.

Built around Open Gate

The 4:3 implementation is arguably the most interesting part of the VF-GFXC2. Open gate acquisition has become increasingly relevant in high-end digital cinema workflows, particularly when productions need maximum sensor area for reframing, multiple delivery formats, stabilization, or anamorphic workflows. However, conventional EVFs are often optimized around wider display formats. Fujifilm’s approach is different. The VF-GFXC2 uses a native 4:3 OLED panel that allows the full ETERNA 55 open gate frame to be displayed across the entire screen. Fujifilm says this enables operators to frame and review the image without cropping while retaining high resolution and brightness. The EVF also provides 1.0x magnification, intended to help operators identify subtle focus changes more easily.

Designed for camera operators

Beyond the display itself, Fujifilm has clearly treated the VF-GFXC2 as a production-oriented cinema accessory rather than simply an external monitor with an eyepiece. A large eyecup is designed to block ambient light and provide better visibility in high-contrast environments. Fujifilm also says the eyecup has been shaped for comfortable use during extended shooting sessions. The EVF body uses a simple cylindrical design with a machined aluminum exterior. By minimizing joints between external components, Fujifilm says the construction improves strength and durability for production environments. Function buttons are positioned within easy reach and provide direct access to tools including display magnification and focus peaking. The diopter adjustment mechanism has also been designed with calibrated resistance for more precise fine-tuning.

Expanding the ETERNA 55 system

The announcement is also another indication of Fujifilm’s intention to develop the GFX ETERNA 55 as a broader cinema camera platform. A dedicated EVF may appear to be a relatively straightforward accessory, but viewfinder design remains important in professional camera operation, particularly for handheld, shoulder-mounted, documentary, and operator-driven shooting configurations. By matching the EVF directly to the ETERNA 55’s native 4:3 open gate format, Fujifilm is designing the monitoring system around the camera’s sensor architecture rather than treating the viewfinder as a generic accessory. The VF-GFXC2 is expected to be released by the end of 2026. Fujifilm will also exhibit the new viewfinder alongside the GFX ETERNA 55 at IBC 2026 in Amsterdam, taking place September 11–14. For cinematographers planning to use the ETERNA 55 in open gate configurations, the VF-GFXC2 could become one of the more important accessories in the camera’s developing ecosystem.
