Canon publishes its Financial Results of 2021

Canon’s Financial Results have been published today. We’ll focus on the Imaging Business Unit. According to Canon, the unit sales of interchangeable-lens digital cameras were at the same level as the previous year due to the shortage of semiconductor chips, despite strong sales of the EOS R5 and EOS R6 full-frame mirrorless cameras. Canon adds that the demand remained solid, mainly in mirrorless cameras. In addition, sales of RF-series interchangeable lenses increased significantly due to the expansion of the lens product lineup.

Outlook: Strengthening the EOS -R lineup

The report states: “As for interchangeable-lens digital cameras, demand is expected to remain solid due to the need for high-quality visual expression. In addition, unit sales of interchangeable-lens digital cameras is expected to exceed that of the current fiscal year due to the effects of backorders caused by the shortage of semiconductor chips in the current fiscal year”. Furthermore: “Canon will strengthen the competitiveness of product lineup mainly in EOS R system cameras and interchangeable lenses while reinforcing sales promotion efforts amid a shift to mirrorless cameras”.

No mention of Cinema cameras

In the whole report, there’s no mention of the Cinema EOS lineup, although there’s a picture of the recently launched EOS R5 C. Hence, Canon might not reveal a new Cinema EOS camera in 2022, and the R&D efforts will be probably concentrated in the mirrorless cameras, and in the shift from DSLR to mirrorless.

  1. I’ve been using Canon hybrid dslr’s for 12 years. But the company’s inability or unwillingness to offer 10 bit or better video, recordable directly to an external ssd, has stopped me upgrading to an R series model. Forcing us to pay an additional $1000 for an Atomos Ninja, just so we can properly access the pro R series’ full specs., is a real turnoff. Bad forward planning, Canon. As a result I am now using two cameras, a Blackmagic PC4K for video, and an old Canon 6D for photos.. won’t touch a new Canon R series till they resolve the stated issue, and/or offer a model that offers real bang for buck.
