The new camera that’s coming this year from ARRI will be a B-Mount native camera. It will be a 24 V camera, and that’s because within that camera we have really exciting image quality improvements that we just need more power for. As we have increased demands for resolution, for colour bit-depth, for framerates: all of these things require more processing which requires more power. And so we’ve made the decision to change to 24 V as the standard across ARRI devices, and certainly B-Mount will be the foundation of that.

ARRI Tech Talk’s newest video

The ARRI Tech Talk’s most recent video focuses on the advantages of the B-Mount 24V battery standard. Sean Dooley, Product Marketing Manager from ARRI, tells you everything you need to know about the new universal, 24 V, onboard battery system: B-Mount, which is ideal for compact camera setups. The B-Mount battery interface is an open industry standard endorsed by ARRI and the wider industry because it makes mobile shooting easier and more efficient. Providing 24 V power, but also being able to support 12 V, B-Mount offers decisive advantages over previous systems. Cross-compatible with on-set camera and lighting equipment from manufacturers worldwide, it enables productions to streamline their power needs and source batteries locally. More info you can be found here. However, more importantly, Sean dropped shreds of information regarding the upcoming ARRI S35 (Super 35) 4K camera.

ALEXA Super 35 4K

In 2020 we’ve reported on a new camera being developed by ARRI. The new camera incorporates a Super 35 sensor and was supposed to be released in 2021. As stated by ARRI back in 2020: “We at ARRI believe in Super 35. Not everybody will shoot Large Format/Full Frame. Many productions, in particular in TV, will remain with Super 35 for the foreseeable future. Therefore, we are also working on a dedicated Super 35 4K camera (not LF), further increasing the choices for cinematographers. This ARRI S35 4K camera will have a new S35 4K 4:3 sensor and the size of the body will be close to the ALEXA Mini LF. It will be compatible with the MVF-2 viewfinder and will support CODEX Compact Drives which have been introduced with the ALEXA Mini LF”. Since then, ARRI hasn’t mentioned this project. However, in the new video by ARRI Tech Talk, Sean elaborates a few sentences about the upcoming ALEXA (we assume that the name is ALEXA S35 4K).

“Exciting image quality improvements”

As stated by Sean: “The new camera that’s coming this year from ARRI will be a B-Mount native camera. It will be a 24 V camera, and that’s because within that camera we have really exciting image quality improvements that we just need more power for. As we have increased demands for resolution, for colour bit-depth, for framerates: all of these things require more processing which requires more power. And so we’ve made the decision to change to 24 V as the standard across ARRI devices, and certainly B-Mount will be the foundation of that.” So there you go, A new ARRI, not LF, but with some solid improvements regarding resolution, color depth, and frame rates. Also, the camera will be released this year. As we know ARRI, the press releases will come after the announcement in the social channels (RED Digital Cinema’s marketing strategy). Stay tuned.
