James Gunn’s  Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 returns. The film was shot on RED V-Raptor by the RED shooter, Henry Braham, BSC. IMAX categorized the film as “Filmed for IMAX” and released an ‘IMAX trailer’. Hence, it can be concluded that the V-Raptor is a part of the “Filmed in IMAX” program, as an IMAX-certified camera.

Henry Braham, James Gunn, and RED Digital Cinema

Cinematographer Henry Braham, BSC has been using RED cameras as his main weapon of choice when shooting James Gunn’s blockbusters. They both looked to the RED Weapon 8K Dragon VV sensor for the Guardians sequel. In fact, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the first feature film captured on this camera. The team was eager for the large format look, which was pretty new back then. We can mark 2017 as the turning point from Super 35mm to Large format. Now it seems that Super 35mm is making a comeback. Anyway, James Gunn stated back then “There’s no camera that looks better out there”, which justifies his decision to go digitally, in large format, and with the RED Weapon 8K. “It’s a large format camera, and it’s tiny, and that’s brilliant” said Braham. A couple of years later, Braham and Gunn picked again RED cameras – the RED Monstro and the new Komodo for shooting The Suicide Squad (Read: The Suicide Squad Trailer Released: Shot on IMAX Certified RED Monstro and Komodo). Braham even used a unique Stabileye Nano which was specially made for the film, paired with the RED Komodo. These were the days when IMAX launched the “Filmed in IMAX” program, and certified the RED Monstro as a digital IMAX camera. The Komodo was not certified though.

As the main camera is the RED V-Raptor, we can conclude that the new DSMC3 by RED is an IMAX-Certified camera, which can be used to shoot digitally for the huge canvas.  Hence, the RED V-Raptor is joining other elite cinema cameras that are IMAX certified, like the ARRI ALEXA LF, Mini LF, 65, Panavision DXL2, Sony VENICE, and RED Monstro.
