Atomos has released an interview with ‘The Creator’’s DP, Oren Soffer, which demonstrates the necessity of the Atomos Ninja V recorder for getting imagery that holds the big screen, by outputting ProRes RAW from the Sony FX3. “Once you tap into (ProRes) RAW and record onto the Ninja, it puts it onto the level where you realize you can intercut it with footage from an ALEXA and not notice the difference,” Oren says. Watch the interview below.
Atomos + FX3 = ALEXA (?!)
It’s not a secret that ‘The Creator’ helped Atomos to recover from its delicate financial situation. Now it’s clearly known that the Atomos Ninja V is the main technology tool that allowed to shoot ‘The Creator’, which is a big-budget Hollywood sci-fi film, on the Sony FX3. In an interview with DP Oren Soffer, it has been emphasized, that ProRes RAW is the format that unlocked the Sony FX3 for the production. The main reason for choosing Sony FX3 is physical freedom. However, without the ability to shoot ProRes RAW via Atomos recorder, the production wouldn’t choose the FX3. That’s for sure! “The recording into the Ninja V recorder, is what puts it up to the level that the footage could intercut or be completed interchange with ALEXA and nobody would really notice it,” said Oren Soffer during the interview. Let’s be reminded — ‘The Creator’ was aimed to be screened on IMAX. Watch the short interview below:
Update on the Audit Process
As you may know, Atomos stock is suspended from trading (article here). Hence, the company needs every backwind it can get. ‘The Creator’ gave Atomos a solid marketing boost, demonstrating the necessity of one of its main products. Another good news is the update regarding the Audit Process. As tested by Atomos: “Following the update provided to the market in the Announcement, the Board wishes to advise that it anticipates that the audit of the Company’s annual financial report will be finalized by early November. The Board further advises that the Company is pursuing a recapitalization plan, on which action is well progressed, and that it expects to be in a position to make a further announcement in this regard by mid-November 2023”.

What happened with the Sapphire 8K global shutter sensor?
Unfortunately, there’s no info (yet) on the Sapphire 8K global shutter ‘World Class’ sensor which was announced a year ago. Back then Atomos stated: “ The Sapphire is a full-frame sensor that goes by the informal name —‘Sapphire 8K’. It offers DCI 8K (8192 x 4320), global shutter recording at up to 60fps. At 4K, the frame rate quadruples to 240fps, and at 1080 it delivers 360fps. The Sapphire F8 will have up to 15 stops of dynamic range with 12-bit capture across all capture modes”. Atomos added that it has been talking with camera companies in order to evaluate implementations. There’s no added news in that regard.

Only downside to ProRes Raw is the fact that it can not be used natively in DaVinci Resolve for grading. Once that issie is ‘resolved’ it would be a solid solution for low/mid budget projects.
BMD has had nearly 5 years to add ProRes RAW support to Resolve. I’d be surprised if it happened anytime soon. Maybe in v. 20 or 21 in 2027 (if it’s still relevant and hasn’t been eclipsed by another raw codec).
