The New York Jets utilizes top-of-the-line cinema cameras like the Canon EOS C300 Mark III, to enrich their social media content, especially YouTube shorts and TikTok. We are living in an era of using high-end cameras and lenses to shoot short videos for platforms made for smartphones. Is it an overkill?
The New York Jets as a case study
The New York Jets have two goals — winning football games and being as portable as possible. Their in-house Performance Studio and content team help with probability by creating professional content daily to bring their fans into the world of football. The team mainly utilizes C300 Mark III, Canon’s Cinema EOS Super 35mm flagship. As stated by the New York Jets: “With Canon, the content team can create content in a studio feel with a camera that perfectly operates in a small space, try different frame rates or different lenses that most people don’t have access to in studio or live production, achieve diverse looks without sacrificing their space in the studio, and gather close/personal content of the Jets players”. C300 Mark III: One of the best EOS Cinema
The Canon C300 Mark III was announced in April 2020. It features a Super 35mm Dual Gain Output sensor with up to 16 stops of high dynamic range capability for HDR recording and low noise. The camera was approved by Netflix in July 2020. Outside, it looks the same as the C500 Mark II, but with a smaller sensor. Besides that, the modularity is identical. Moreover, in our opinion, it produces the best image quality overall compared to other EOS Cinema cameras, thanks to its high dynamic range (based on the DGO technology). Here are the key features:
- Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor
- Cinema RAW Light and XF-AVC H.264 Codec
- Dual Pixel CMOS AF and Face Detection
- 12G-SDI and 4-Channel Audio Recording
- Electronic Image Stabilization
- 4K 120p, 2K Crop 180p HDR
- EF Lens Mount, DIGIC DV7 Image Processor
- LM-V2 4.3″ LCD Touchscreen Monitor
- 2 x CFexpress Slots, Canon Log2 and 3
- Proxy Recording, Anamorphic Lens Support
An overkill for social media?
Since TikTok and YT Shorts style videos become more and more popular, all you need to do is to upload a quick and dirty video via your smartphone into your social media platform for fast audience engagement. These platforms were optimized for smartphone interface, and indeed, today’s smartphones have superior image quality for these social media channels. However, the New York Jets prefers, like many others, to use top-of-the-line cinema cameras for this purpose. Is it worth it? It might. If you have a dedicated media team with a hefty budget, it might make sense to use cinema cameras for TikTiok. However, for small businesses, it may become less practical. Sure, the content has more potential to be presented beautifully, but it will take you a ton of time to shoot the material, color-correct it, and more. Shooting for TikTok on cinema cameras might not be worth the hassle. Is it an overkill?
