AVP: The dream of tech companies

The Apple Vision Pro is the ultimate dream of tech companies. And that’s from the negative side because one’s dream can be another’s nightmare. This device which is presented as a Spatial Computer is designed for all-day use. Apple fans, enthusiastic and early adopters have already recorded themselves using it for dozens of hours on end, and even wearing it while sleeping. This means the device mediates everything about a user’s experience. Thus, it can defined as the dream of tech companies because you never have to take it off. “They can always have your attention. They always know where you’re looking. They always know what you’re doing” says sociocultural anthropologist Lisa Messeri of Yale University. A comprehensive article published by Scientific American summarizes studies that investigated the health, psychological, and cognitive implications of the AVP. That continues the very concerning report by Bloomberg regarding health problems and side effects caused by using the AVP (eyestrain, headache, vision problems, etc).

Will not replace your physical monitors and keyboard

According to Scientific American, many experts are skeptical that this kind of headset can—or should—replace our physical monitors, keyboards, and mice. Some worry that using such a device for long periods could lead to motion sickness, new types of social isolation, or other unintended consequences. Furthermore, researchers found that wearing a headset seriously restricts a user’s visual perception—and could also change social behavior and motor function, visual delays, and other distortions. Color saturation varies frequently. Light dims. Some objects appear too close or blurry. Even though the Vision Pro has impressive specifications, its image resolution is still lower than what human eyes are used to perceiving. “This is purely speculative, but there could be effects on the way your eyes move around in space, and maybe that could make your vision worse,” researchers suggest. “We don’t know what that will do to our brain”.

AVP is iPad on your face

As stated by Scientific America: “Meta is saying VR is just another gaming platform… Apple is saying it’s your iPad but on your face—yet another productivity device. If, in the next technological era, all we’re doing is the same thing we do on screens now but on a screen that’s a couple of inches in front of our eyes, that’s not inspiring”. Additionally, we wrote before about the probability of demoralization of social skills in youngsters and kids, explaining that the AVP takes the major and destructive effects of smartphones on youngsters and kids, and amplifies them even further to the negative side, making the kid disconnected from the environment. We said that this implication could be a solid agenda for Ph.D. studies. We are sure that many studies will investigate the opposing phenomena of the AVP, from the physiological angle, and the cognitive side as well. We advise you to wait a bit before spending your $3,500.
