Should a cinema camera be compared to a mobile phone camera? This great video says it should. Here you go! A fight between the Canon EOS C200 vs the iPhone X camera! Which will make it to the podium? Read below.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not sarcastic about this comparison. This is actually a very well done video. There are numerous videos out there that are trying to compare a cinema camera to a phone camera. Of course it’s easy. You take a shot with your RED/Alexa (whatever), and you take a shot with your iPhone/Samsung (whatever). Then you compare those images to determine which is better…?
In this video, the Canon C200 Cinema RAW Light was compared to the iPhone X.
Hypothesis (and also conclusion): the C200 wins
The Canon EOS C200 is really a great cinema camera that delivers outstanding professional results. The Cinema RAW Light is absolutely amazing with a lot of freedom in post. The iPhone X owns a sophisticated state of the art camera as well. But are they even comparable?
The simple answer is NO.
C200 has a super 35 sensor size which leads to much more vibrant colors, Image accuracy, higher details and more.
C200 has RAW (Cinema RAW Light) which significantly enhance the freedom in post, dynamic range and more.
Also don’t forget the ability to change lenses that allows the artistic privilege of bokeh, DOF, FOV and more.
Those advantages are just the tip of the iceberg.
The different between video and cinema imagery
Having said that, take a look at the video. The iPhone X produces stunning images as well straight out of the device, as opposed to the Canon C200 Cinema RAW Light codec which needs some adjustments in post.
Also the dynamic range of the iPhone X, as presented in the video is really impressive.
However, the iPhone X shots look more video-ish, in term of over sharpening, over saturated and computerized, compare to the Canon C200 that look much more cinematic and artistic. In fact, you are looking at the different between video and cinema imagery.
Moreover, take the Cinema RAW Light, change the lenses, put the camera in cinematic environments (in term of lights and composition), push the grade to utilize the RAW, and you are in a whole new ball game, and this game is amplified when using a professional screen or cinema projection.
In spite of that, go now and watch the video on its full resolution with a professional screen, just because it’s very educating and fun to watch.
Have you decided what camera to buy? What would be your weapon of choice? The Canon C200 or the iPhone X? ….. 🙂
