The ADOBE MAX is an annual event held by Adobe Systems, with a purpose to promote the latest ADOBE releases to those in the computer design and development industries.

As you all know, the hot jargon is RAW Ultra Resolution native editing, which is one of the primary purposes of the NVIDIA Studio Driver, RTX Ray tracing and AI technology. The goal here is to utilize GPU (Graphical Processing Unit) rather than CPU (Central Processing Unit). NVIDIA has been pushing hard on this direction by partnering with major film industry technology companies (ADOBE, Blackmagic Design, and RED Digital Cinema), to offer the best solutions to filmmakers and professional editors.

We wrote numerous articles regarding the RTX technology and GPU utilization when powerful rendering capabilities are needed (8K ProRes RAW playback, for instance).

All solutions are PC based since Mac isn’t in the picture (Read here about the saga of Apple and NVIDIA). It seems that NVIDIA is preparing for the Mac Pro launch by offering technological alternatives to boost the workflow and post-process on PC machines.

Let’s explore the brand new announcements at ADOBE MAX.

Premiere Pro Auto-Reframe feature

Premiere Pro is being accelerated by NVIDIA’s RTX ray tracing and AI processors, which means that video editors will get the benefits of AI in a new Auto Reframe feature. The feature is supposed to significantly cut down the amount of tie it takes to reframe video from landscape to portrait.

According to NVIDIA,  the Auto Reframe is allowed thanks to the new GPU- accelerated AI technology utilized by the application. It uses Adobe Sensei AI to identify and track the most relevant elements in a video, and intelligently reframes video content for different aspect ratio. NVIDIA says that its RTX GPUs makes this feature 400 percent faster than on CPUs.

The automating of this conversion (from landscape to portrait) is a big time saver. Nearly 60 percent of the worlds’ video is consumed on mobile phones in portrait mode (FB, Instagram). Yet, the vast majority of the video is still captured in a traditional landscape perspective. With the new Auto Reframe tool, you can get your videos on social media faster.

Take a look at the video below which demonstrates Premiere Pro capabilities of smooth editing and Auto Reframe features, derived from GPU-acceleration, AI, and RTX technologies:

New NVIDIA Studio Driver

Moreover, NVIDIA announces a new Studio Driver, with up to 12% performance gains in Premiere Pro and REDCINE-X-PRO.

This new driver is probably an improved version of the last driver, which provides optimizations for popular creative apps like ADOBE Premiere Pro and Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve. The previous Studio Driver supported 30-bit color in OpenGL apps such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere for all GPUs. So that creators can work with their HDR photos and videos with full accuracy and without the banding typical of 24-bit color.

The driver delivers up to 12 percent performance boosts in top creative apps, including Adobe Premiere Pro and REDCINE-X PRO

RTX Studio: Two new BOXX beasts (initial price: $8,000)

We have been covering the elite RTX Studio laptops on many articles. Just a reminder, NVIDIA RTX Laptops are supposed to give a counter strike to the Macbook Pros, which have been dominating the filmmaking industry for a long time. Benchmark testing revealed that RTX Studios are more efficient concerning native ultra-resolution (transcoding free) RAW editing and workflow. It will be interesting to reveal what will happen when the upcoming Macbook Pro 16 inch arrives.

Nevertheless, the new RTX Studio members are desktops, as being stated by NVIDIA: “We’re adding two new systems with more performance than most creative will be able to throw at it, to the RTX Studio program. BOXX “king of performance” – the W4L features Quadro 8000 GPUs. BOXX S3, which features support for dual Quadro GPU. Both of them receive the RTX Studio badge”.

These two beasts are dedicated to professionals and may constitute decent alternatives to the upcoming Mac Pro. However, the BOXXs are not cheap (starting from $8,000), although this seems to be much more affordable options when compared to the new Mac Pro.

Conclusions

The post-production arena is getting heated. One of the reasons, or should I say, two reasons, are Macbook Pro 16 and Mac Pro. NVIDIA combats Apple by elevating the PC workstations’ power by GPU acceleration and utilization. Reviewers praise the RTX Studio laptops for letting them edit and grade 8K natively on Premiere Pro and Resolve. It will be interesting to reveal the editing capabilities of the upcoming Macbook Pro 16 and Mac Pro. NVIDIA has its CUDA, and Apple has its Metal, so it’s two different worlds. However, we can’t wait to compare Mac Pro’s Afterburner against one of NVIDIA’s flagships GPU (Quadro, for instance). The bottom line is that we are going to explore more and more effective solutions for the professional filmmaking industry, which is great.

We’ll keep you posted regarding further announcements form both companies, so stay tuned.
